Behind the Counter: Low Pro Graphics

Family-owned Low Pro Graphics prides itself on quality work and on being part of the Parkville community.

It'd be nearly impossible to miss Low Pro Graphics as you drive along Harford Road—they've got two window displays packed with neon-colored high-visibility safety gear. The print shop has been rolling out hand-screened, custom clothing at their Harford Road location since 2008.

The shop is the brainchild of owner Carol Donovan, who has a background in custom clothing, and her son Sean, who's been screen printing since high school.

They got their start in the garage of the home on Linwood Avenue that Carol and her husband Tom have lived in for 27 years.

"It's where God's path took us," Carol said. "We just kind of fell into it."

At first they were doing mostly contract work but they steadily built local business on the back of quality work and word of mouth. Four years ago they moved into the storefront sandwiched between comic book shop Collector's Corner and Just Audio.

"Parkville is such a supportive community, everybody knows everybody," Carol said.

"This community is made up of good, down-to-earth, blue-collar, hard-working people," Sean said.

"A lot of this stuff in the store you could order, but we get customers in all the time who say 'I'd rather keep it local'," Carol said.

Keeping it local is something they do well at Low Pro—self-described Parkville lifers themselves, they've done printing jobs for everyone in town: Parkville High's athletic boosters, countless Parkville Rec sports teams, McAvoy's restaurant, you name it and Low Pro's probably made a shirt.

Or a pen, or a mug, or maybe some pants.

If it can be printed on, they will print on it.

"I once printed some thongs," Sean said. "I've also printed on a clear baseball case that someone had signed."

Tom, who is semi-retired, is also involved in the family business.

Several days each week he drives the Be Safe, Be Seen mobile store, a yellow trailer loaded with the high-visibility work safety gear, down to the Port of Baltimore.

"I deal with truck drivers from all over, they come to the port and don't realize you need a safety vest to get in—I'm right there to help them out," Tom said.

The Donovans never planned on the Be Safe, Be Seen aspect of the business. Carol explained they just sort of fell into it, but it's been very successful—leading to new business with companies like Gray & Son, a construction company based in Timonium, and area steelworkers and dockworkers unions.

Soon Low Pro will get equipped to handle even more business. Currently Sean screen prints each piece by hand using a wooden block and elbow grease to force ink through the screens.

Using that method, an order of 300 pieces takes him two and a half days of work. Next week, though, they're getting a machine that automates the process and will cut the time to complete a 300 item order down to about three hours.

Things are looking great for Carol, Sean and Tom, and one thing is for sure — they're not going anywhere.

"The house is paid off, we've got our business here, we'll be in Parkville forever," Carol said.

Has Low Pro Graphics done a printing job for you? Do you buy your work safety wear there? You can review the store in our directory.

I am sure these people are very nice, and i appreciate the fact that they are lifetime Parkville folks, but the print quality does not even come close to Firehouse Graphics up the street. I also want to add that this is not a union shop, and unions should only buy from union shops,

Eddie,
Union shop? Anyone should be able to buy from anyone.
It does not sound like you have had any type of business relationship with "these people." . If you did and had an issue with the quality of the printing I know that the Donovan's would have bent over backwards to give you the product you expected.

Again, same comment as above, stop wasting your time bashing another company and try to make yours better. That is a terrible way to run a business!!!

They did a great job on printing Parkville Main Street t-shirts. They were helpful in designing the layout, gave us a good price, and had the shirts done in time for the Parkville Fair. Loved this story in the Patch. Main Street is all about business owners that live near their work and are a part of the community.

I love this store. Carol created T-shirts for my husband's business for me as a surprised. He loved them. The quality was great! And the logo printed was just what I wanted. Turned out perfect. Those comments above sound so fake. I live in Parkville and have never heard a unkind word about Carol's store or her family. Terry S.

This company has done terrific work for my companies for years. I worked for a small non-profit social services agency with very limited funds for branding items. LowPro worked with us frequently over the past 6 years to create tee & golf shirts that fit our limited budgets. I cannot tell you the number of hours Mrs. Donovan spent helping us design logos because we couldn't afford to hire an outside designer. Some of our programs are headed by people with limited experience in purchasing but she and Sean are always ready to help walk them through the process & have never missed a deadline-even the impossible ones! The quality was far better than any of the vendors we had previously used - our Board of Directors was very impressed with their products & I still see our shirts being worn by the participants in our programs years later - often handed down from an older sibling who has outgrown them! Quality products that last are exactly what you want when you are putting your hard-earned name on something and sending it out there!. I won't point fingers & name names but suffice to say quality & customer service are not always a high priority with some vendors who talk a good game but can't deliver when the time comes. Dealing with LowPro has always been a delight start to finish for me. I am now the purchasing agent for a large local university with a much higher budget & much larger jobs & we are always delighted to use LowPro's services. I am sure you will be too!

Gee Carol, your competition seems threatened by your business. Comments like that are usually a "Hail Mary" for a company that is going down the drain. I wouldnt pay any attention to them. Like you said, hiding behind the message board. No chance they would say that to you in person or even identify themselves. I think there called cowards. Here's to you and Tom and the whole gang. You have done a great job building that business over the years.

Wow it is really sad that people have nothing better to do then to try and give a bad name to people you don't even know! I am the daughter of Tom and Carol Donovan, and worked with the company for 5+ years. From the garage to Harford road, we have always had VERY good feedback and customers that return year after year! I'm sorry that you competitors feel threatened by us but as stated before there is enough business out there for all of us. Feel free to stop in and check us out :) Low Class is what these horrible comments are and again I'm sorry you feel the need to say these things about poeple you have never met nor done any type of business with! Have a great weekend :)

It could not be more obvious that there is an agenda behind the negative comments. I met the Donavan family years ago and tell you they are truly GREAT hardworking people that care about our community. As far as the quality of the product they put out...It could not be better. I've ordered shirts from them (currently wearing one that has been washed 100 plus times and still looks as sharp as the day I got them) The price was more than fair. Low Pro and the Donavan family are truly an asset to the community and I'm proud to call them friends.

I have know the Donovan family for many years and consider them good friends and their company a wonderful company that provides top quality work. For many years Low Pro Graphics has provided quality t-shirts and giveaways for our Special Olympic Fishing Tournament that not only raises funds for the Maryland Special Olympics, but also provides a fun day of fishing, trophies and great food for 40 plus special athletes. I would highly recommend this company to anyone looking for a great product and a company that always GIVES BACK to the community!

Low Pro Graphics made t-shirts for the dance program that I am involved with, and as far as I know, everyone was extremely happy with the shirts we received. In fact, after receiving our first order, we had to submit a second order because parents and students wanted additional shirts.

Everyone at Low Pro Graphics seemed knowledgeable and friendly, and they helped us to create a fun t-shirt design that was appropriate for both children and adults. Carol listened to our ideas for the shirt, and also contributed her own opinion (without being pushy)... and we then combined all of our ideas to create a fantastic product. When the time comes for us to have more shirts made (or other items, such as water bottles), I think the program will definitely return to Low Pro Graphics.

I have worked with Low Pro Graphics for many years now and I have had nothing but outstanding work. They work in a professional manner and are always able to work with me on all my orders. I am a very picky person, and since I have returned to Low Pro Graphics, I have received nothing but the best service and the best quality printing. I definitely recommend Low Pro Graphics to anyone who needs to have something printed. I give them 5 out of 5 on the rating scale. I will never go to another printing shop as long as they are around.

The Donovan family does great work and will bend over backwards to give you what you want. They also let my daughter spend the day with them to make Special Olympic T-shirts so she could get some Community service hours in. The people that made the negative comments above certainly has never done business with this family. Nancy Miller

Dear Readers,
First, the angry and vicious negative comments really don't belong here. Not only do they sound like personal issues but the lack of specifics speaks volumes.
Finally, Mr.and Mrs. Donovan are two of the kindest and most generous persons and business owners I know. It is my experience that their product is superior and their dealings with the public and community are nothing but honorable. Not only would I do business with them but I would welcome them to my circle of friends.

First of all, Thank you Nick. This is a very well written article, and it was a delight to read. :-) I cannot sum up my feelings for this company into 100 characters. So watch out 3 comments full coming at ya!...I was a dancer for the Washington Capitals, and when we needed custom designed shirts for our 5K race for the cure, Low Pro Graphics stepped up the challenge. Since we had to stand out in a crowd of thousands of people, they went above and beyond to make sure we were bright, sparkly, and looked amazing. The quality of print was outstanding and they worked extremely hard to create exactly what we wanted, AND they gave us a great price! Unfortunately due to an error of the mail system, the day before our race, the shirts were not in. So what did Low Pro do for us? They opened their shop in the middle of a Friday night, to not only print us more tops, but also create the exact same quality tops as the first set. Then they didn’t even charge for the second set, and had them hand delivered! THAT is the integrity that is Low Pro Graphics. Does that sound like a crook to you?

Everyday this business family goes above and beyond for its customers. Just walk into their shop and you will see some of the samples of work they have done for their loyal customers. Better yet, I see products of Low Pro Graphics daily around Baltimore. From the tee-shirt for a fishing tournament in 2004 that I saw in a gym last week, to shirt for an Orthodontist office my co-worker wore the other day, to a hat created for the Special Olympics, to the curtains created for the bar/restaurant right across the street. To have a single negative comment about this business, you must not have talked to them at all. In fact when a local competitor’s printer broke, it was Low Pro Graphics that allowed him to come and use theirs to prevent him from losing business. THAT is the integrity that is Low Pro Graphics.

The only type of people who come in and out of Low Pro Graphics/Be Safe Be Seen, are hard working citizens of Parkville and Baltimore, and are the same customers that keep all businesses of Parkville Main Street open and running. Carol, Tom, and Sean will keep getting bigger and better, and it is due to their hard work, kind hearts, and dedication to their customers and community. They say you get what you pay for, and I would prefer to pay reasonable prices for amazing quality from great personalities and a great business.

Low Pro Graphics, great people, great product and it has been a pleasure working with Carol, Tom and Sean. The quality of their products speaks for itself and the integrity with wich the Donovan family stands behind it's business are only part of the reason why Fit2Win Sportswear has had a long standing relationship with Low Pro. Their business practices are beyond reproach and it has been our pleasure to work with the Donovan family over many years. Their ongoing efforts both personally as a family and professionally in their business dealings with Special Olympics is simply exceptional and inspirational. From one family business to another, keep up the great work!

Low Pro Graphics has done more than one job for me. They did tee shirts and sweatshirts for On Board Electrical Services - Carol Donovan actually made the design - and it turned out exactly the was we visioned it. They also did shirts for JD Custum Plumbing. Again, Carol designed them. I called Carol a few times and needed tee shirts for Red Lion Girls Basketball for tournaments, and her and Sean stayed late and had these printed for me within a few days! They also did tee shirts and sweatshirts for Red Lion Soccer Club! Which extends their company into Pennsylvania! EVERY job she has ever done for me has been quality work!
As mentioned above - Low Pro has done tee shirts for the Goose Harbor Special Olympics for MANY years! Which they donate the time and the shirts! My daughter also had the opportunity to help make the tee shirts and the laundry bags.
I am not sure why someone would like to try to trash a family business that has and continues to grow! The Donovan's treat everyone with the upmost respect!
I for one am proud to say that I know the Donovan's and would recommend them to anyone to have any work done!

Just Audio LLC- Electronic Service Repair, which is mentioned in the article, are neighbors to Low Pro graphics. We have had business shirts made by them and they are fantastic! All of our customers comment on the Tee shirts all the time. They really work with small business who need a small run of shirts. They care about the small business as well as their corporate accounts equally. They are not only professional, with a high level of detail to the quality of their work, but are kind and caring to everyone that enters their place of business. I highly recommend everyone I know personally and professionally to this business. They are first class in everything they do!!!

I met Sean and the rest of his family a few years back. It only takes a few moments to realize they are great down to Earth people. I also ordered a few shirts with a logo for a small sports club from them. They cleaned up the logo and did great work with a limited quantity.
The best thing local small businesses can do is offer great customer service and quality product.
Good for them! Nice article! SHOP LOCAL!

I have known the Donovan’s for a while now, they good people with good values and strong family ties. Do business with them and you will be treated right? I won’t dignify the common and negative remarks with any more response then that. I will say to those who look for any forum to cast negative remarks, I am sorry for you. It must be sad in your world.

As a new business owner in the area, these comments only make me more decided on working with Low Pro on our shirts. Our industry is very cut throat and I have zero tolerance for other indoor tanning salons cutting one another and other businesses for that matter. In this ecomony we all deserve a fair opportunity to conduct a fair business. I had a bit of a stall this week but Carol will be on my Monday morning to-do list!

Im a new customer to Low Pro Graphics and Im looking forward to a long working relationship with this family run business. In todays world seldom do you find a business that will take the time to answer questions for hours at a time. Not to long ago the owner August J. Becker III, Anne, and myself the Sales manager of Paramedical Personnel of Maryland went to meet with Carol. All three of us were not expecting to get the undivided attention that Carol, Tom and Shawn gave each of us that day. Their are so many business's that are out to make the $$$$ and could care less about customer service. Low Pro Graphics is a honest and repuitable business which values their reputation and cares what the customer thinks of the products being made. Thank you Low Pro Graphics!!! Vanessa Burns

As far as low pro grapics business I have three corporations and have purchased products from them. We were completely satisfied with the quality and pricing and they do not need to be defended in any way about their business. What I can't stand is the ignominious remarks about the family. I have known them for at least 15 years.
The kids are some of the most respectful and honest hard working young people I have ever known. Their familly values could only come from parents with the same . My family has the privilege to know them and call them friends
