BGE Activates Its ‘PeakRewards Event’ Today

Air conditioners of participating customers will run at 50 percent for three to five hours.

Time to draw the blinds, turn on your overhead fans, and make sure the blades are spinning counter-clockwise.

If you’re a member of BGE’s PeakRewards program, your central air conditioning will be “cycled,” which is the fancy way of saying that for the duration of today’s PeakRewards event—usually three to five hours—the compressor will only run at the 50 percent level.

This applies “even for customers who enrolled at the higher levels of 75 and 100 percent,” BGE’s press release states.

“Customers participating in the water heater program will experience a 100 percent cycling of their water heaters,” states the release, “meaning their water will not be reheated until the event ends.”

Today’s event is a non-emergency activation, which means customers can override the cycling using their PeakRewards device. A customer can override an event two times per device, per season.

Customers receive credits on their BGE bills when they participate in the PeakRewards program. If you’re interested in signing up, go to www.BGESmartEnergy.com or call 1-888-309-PEAK (7325).

So happy I didn't sign up for this program. And I sure hope it doesn't become mandatory at some point in the future, which I fear it will.

Stephanie,
Be very thankful you didn't sign up. The handful of dollars in savings is not worth the aggravation. They cycled me yesterday after I got home from work, hot and tired, so I used one of my 2 overrides. Today, I was off from work, but they cycled me again around 12 pm, and I chose to use my last override. Around 3:30 pm, they went into "emergency-mode", which means I'm getting cycled again, whether I like it or not, and there's nothing I can do. I can't override it, and I can't withdrawal from the program until after the emergency event.
You can bet for sure I'm calling BGE first thing tomorrow morning and opting out completely.

My third floor apartment is SOOO hot. Well, not SOOOO hot, but pretty dang hot. The AC is set to cool down to 77 degrees, but the temp in here is at 89 degrees. I almost called to have maintenance service the AC, but then saw the words "Savings Mode" across the top of the thermostadt. Ugh. But it's off now, and has been since 5:00. It isn't so bad. I didn't even have to override. I just used my oscillating fan and took a nice cool bath. :)

Good job Lexa! If everyone tries alternatives they'll find way to get through the savings mode and maybe get used to 78 that would really save you on your bill. Don't curse the Darkness light a candle.
