Man Charged With Animal Cruelty at Parkville Shelter

Anthony Joseph Geer, 29, was arrested and charged with 23 counts of animal cruelty on Thursday.

A Cambridge man was arrested Thursday nearly a month after being charged with and charged with animal cruelty involving at least 18 puppies at a Parkville animal shelter.

Anthony Joseph Geer, 29, faces 23 counts of animal cruelty in connection with the incident.

Police officers found the puppies and 5 dogs "in deplorable condition" at Baltimore Animal Rescue Network, in the 8600 block of Quentin Avenue, on Jan. 24, according to a news release from the office of Baltimore County State's Attorney Scott Shellenberger.

Three of the puppies had to be euthanized immediately due to their condition.

A booking photo of Geer was not made immediately available by the Dorchester County Sherriff's Department. Charging documents are attached to this article as a .pdf.

Geer was arrested Feb. 21 in Dorchester after the Baltimore County State's Attorney's office charged him late last month following a joint effort between the Baltimore County Police Department and Baltimore County Animal Control, the release states.

He is being held on $30,000 bond at the Dorchester County Detention Center.

"Officers responded based on a complaint to animal control about the location," said John Cox, a spokesman for the states attorney's office. The charges were then filed by the Animal Abuse Unit at the States Attorney's Office.

His daughter was there (cute as a button) along with his wife. His wife never said a word to us while we were there. There were three other guys there that were suppose to be helping him taking care of the dogs. As far as I'm concerned, there all as guilty as he is. She doesn't have to go along with his dumb ass .I was there for about half an hour and could already see that he was a piece of shit

We got a dog through this guy back in August. For some reason I am not suprised at this. He seemed very shady...He also did not show up when he was supposed to when we were getting the puppy fixed. So sad. Passing himself off to be helping animals....he gave us some sob story about how our puppy was rescued in TN and how the previous owner had abused him. Awful!! So glad we have at least one of these poor animals away from this guy now.

If you adopted from Baltimore Animal Rescue Network, you'll want to read this:

Found out today that the owner of B.A.R.N is out on bail and claiming he is innocent. His lawyer is backing him calling the recent attacks against the "rescue" were slander. I tried to link the wbal interview to this page and don't think it worked. You can search "animal abuse" in their tab on the website and see the lawyer give Tony Greer a shining reference. There are several quotes that disturb me in this interview. Please watch the video, please contact : apedoherty5@gmail.com if you have adopted from him and have had issues with your pet's health. SHARE please. If you do not know about this, Baltimore Animal Rescue Network was a "rescue" that was adopting out very sick puppies because the man was picking them up from shelters one day and adopting them out the next without a holding/isolation period! He kept dogs and puppies in their own feces and urine, in cage all day and night. He had fosters all over the counties (balt/harco) who were allowed to adopt out to whomever they wanted. Most dogs were not up to date on vaccines, were sick and come adoption time, you would meet them in a parking lot at night. If the dog came with meds, they were in a tin foil ball and 6 times the dose needed. I assume it is because they were HUMAN medications. He was a puppy flipper. Charging 250-300 a puppy.

Ok, let get it right. It was your Aunts house he rented and not a shelter.Does that make what he did any better? According to him, he lived there and he had a shelter in the back of your Aunts house he was renting. I can't believe your Aunt couldn't have picked up on what he was doing.

"I can't believe your aunt didn't pick up on it". She was renting the house out because she was out of the country. It is not her fault. In fact, when SHE found out, she REPORTED IT.

SJ - sounds like you have a guilty conscience.....trying a little too hard to "stick up" for the folks involved or associated with the case. May God have mercy on your souls b/c I'm pretty sure you knew a little something something about what your friend/family member (not sure which one he is to you) was up to.

GP-
Sounds like you have a reading comprehension problem. No, I'm not related to nor do I know the dog abuser. I don't know how you could comprehend my saying that the person who owned the house reported the crime, and was therefore not at fault, as my "guilty conscience".

Kindly go suck a fat one.

Well SJ....then why are you so emotionally responsive in these threads and how do you know all of the case details if you have no affiliation to any of the folks involved or the case at all? You made no sympathetic comments regarding how you are disgusted by the pain and suffering the animals went through but have a lot to say about other things. Seems a little suspect....

Hahaha first you misread my comment, now I was too "emotionally" responsive but not "sympathetic". I think it's obvious that everyone is disgusted by this man and what these animals went through, including myself. No, once again, I am not related or affiliated in any way with the dog abuser. I was responding under this thread, started by "J", responded to by "CSi" where the reply was "I can't believe your aunt didn't pick up on it", which was a ridiculous comment for her to make. This was even more ridiculous because she "couldn't believe her aunt hadn't picked up on" the situation, meanwhile, the commenter herself had physically gone into the house, seen it, obviously was upset by it, and still didn't report it. In regards to your comment about my "emotional" response, CSi had an "emotional" and "sympathetic" response, but did she actually take action and report it? No. Why don't you go off on her, then?

Had this been a "poor puppy boo hoo" thread, I may have answered differently, and perhaps more "sympathetically".

There are other news sources besides the Patch, where you can find more information about the case. It was featured on the evening news. You can find other links posted throughout these comments. That is how I (and maybe even YOU, TOO!) can find more information about it.

Again, please work on your reading comprehension skills. I hear Hooked on Phonics did wonders for kids in the 90's, maybe you can find it on eBay.

Aren't these shelters regulated? Did he have a license to operate? Did the Animal Rescue Network accept donations? Where there any others employed by him? Someone had to know what was going on before things got to the point of "deplorable conditions." If he rented a house to use as a shelter, wouldn't the owner of the house know about the conditions?

It wasn't a shelter. He rented a house and was running it out of the basement until the landlord discovered it and evicted him: http://foxbaltimore.com/news/features/top-stories/stories/man-charged-animal-cruelty-parkville-18066.shtml#.USgo21fLL50

We got a puppy through him first week of January. When we arrived at the house it stunk so bad smelled like dog crap and they had a honey suckle candle burning to get rid of the stinch. They finally brought out the puppy that we seen on the web site and they had to give her a bath before we were able to hold her.stated she had mud on her. When they finally brought her to us she smelled so badly like dog shit we almost didn't take her. When I held her you could feel every rib on her poor body. As soon as I looked in her eyes they seemed to say please get me out of here. I knew right then I was not going to leave without her. Paid $250.00 for her took her to the vet that following Monday she was dehydraded, had round worms and blood infection. $1200.00 and still counting we are still trying to nurse her back in good health. They named her spotty, but we renamed her Bella. She is the most loving dog anyone could ask for. She appreciates everything that you do for her. We love her unconditionally. I am so happy that we got her out of those living conditions. The only thing I can say is I wish they would put Anthony Geer in a cage don't feed him let him lay in his own shit, die of hyrdation then euthanise him. Jail is too good for him. Why should our tax dollars take care of this scum bag?

Thank you Kevin for the information. It makes me so sad that shit like this goes on all the time. I just love our dog that we got out of that stinking place. Like I said before $1200.00 and still counting, but I know she will eventually get better. She has so much love to give despite the way she was treated. The way I look at it now is, finally, these precious animals don't have to live in such unbearable conditions. Since we rescued Bella, she has gained 14 lbs.

The house was not rented to him but to his father and per the lease agreement no tenants were permitted to have animals in the house at anytime In my personal opinion anyone who would go to a home and think it was a shelter is a moron to begin with. Clearly you are in a neighborhood and there are no signs of any type of business located there. Also, just because you rent something out doesn't mean you live right by it this is why it was rented in the first place. So don't insinuate that someone is suppose to know everything that is going on everywhere at any given moment and since you gave this dipshit guy money, did you bother to file a complaint with someone at animal control afterwards yourself or did you not think to do that on your own and just allow the other dogs to continue to suffer because you got yours already? To me that would make me think that your no better than that guy is. Next time anyone decides to get a pet online they should actually do some research first because people spend their money and give it to guys like this without using any intelligent thoughts is why people can continue to make a profit doing this. if people did not buy then this most likely would not occur so often or as easily.

THANK YOU! And I'm sorry, but if you rent a place, does the landlord barge in ever so often unannounced just to check and see what is going on? NO. People are so self-righteous and all knowing when they could have damn well reported him after "rescuing" her poor puppy that she "almost didn't take" except the poor "eyes begged please get me out of here" (oh what a hero you are!). And yes I'm talking to you CSi, just in case your thick skull didn't cue you in on that. You know, just like it didn't cue you in to report a problem with a place that smelled so badly because of the "stinch" of dog crap (which is actually called a stench, but I guess your grasp on the English language is just as great as your concern for a "stinchy" house of puppies, which apparently you forgot about after you "saved" your own, until you found the opportunity to complain about it on a news site after the problem was solved, as if you ACTUALLY did anything that matters).

A realtor was renting the home out for the owners because they had to move out of the country. I think they did all the right things in leaving their home in the hands of a so called professional realty company. The person on the rental agreement was not the person arrested although they should be as well. The renter passed a background check, but thought it was fine to move his son (a criminal) into the home with him. This guy only lived in the home since August 2012 and used the home almost immediately to do his dirty business. These criminals know how to circumvent laws and lie to people. It took several months of investigation to catch these idiots in action. Considering the renters have only been in the home about 6 months the authorities and investigators did a good job finally getting this fool out and arrested. Hopefully people won't buy animals from people where they see or smell the abuse in action. Report it people. If some of those self righteous people posting on here would report what they see then maybe some of those animals wouldn't have had to suffer or die. If you walk into a place that is deplorable then you need to report it. If you don't know the laws you cannot just throw someone out anymore. The eviction process is not immediate.

I work in a vet hospital that dealt with this guy. He lied to us and said he had adopted out about 5,000 dogs within the last 8 months. We knew it was a lie, but being a "rescue" wanted to help out anyway possible. UNTIL, we started seeing puppies from his "rescue" come back with upper respitory infections orPARVO and underweight. He also lied to people about the dogs being up to date with vaccines. They weren't. He wanted to save money. I know this because he brought us a puppy with a broken leg. We kept him in hospital for quite a while. Mr. Greer was supposed to return in 2 weeks for a cast/bandage change and recheck. 4 weeks later he came back and the puppy was COVERED in urine and feces. The bandage was saturated and falling off. The poor boy also lost 4 pounds. For a growing puppy that pretty devastating. When asked what happened he said they were told "strict restriction" so the puppy STAYED in his tiny crate all day and night for 4 weeks. The doctor gave him hell. The pup ended up being fostered by an employee because she couldn't stand the condition the dog was in. And despite his poor treatment, he would lower his head and wag his tail when you talked to him. The employee was able to place this guy the day after she picked him up to foster. He was then covered in urine and feces. He had tapeworms and was not up to date on anything. But Tony didn't want to spend that money. Those folks paid 300 bucks for that boy. FOR WHAT??!! To rescue him.

PS. The wbal interview with his lawyer bothered me. The lawyer said "he didn't make that much money"....it's a rescue...you don't PROFIT from a rescue. The money should go back into the rescue not his pocket. He also had ads on craiglist with the available dogs and pups. My work fired him. After we had him sign over a puppy with parvo that he didn't want to put that much money into. After blood transfusions and trying really hard, that tiny 4 pound puppy died alone in a kennel. We also put a puppy to sleep that a father had gotten his daughter for christmas, the day after! The poor pup was so sick from parvo. He is a cruel person. And he had fosters all over the place with his dogs. He is also associated with ECAA (known also as Dogs in Danger). Please, if you have had experiences with this monster, speak up and email or call the states attorney's office.

We adopted a puppy from him in late November. He made alot of claims similar that were stated above. He claimed he had connections and didn't need any application completed because he has ways of doing background checks on you. He never asked my name, so how does one do a background check without it. The puppy we adoped was 8 weeks old and covered in feces. He cleaned it up. Supposedly was up to date on vaccines, but we took her to vet immediately and she has worms extremely bad. Not uncommon with puppies, but her eyes were also infected. We had wanted to see all 8 puppies that he had, but he wouldn't allow us to go down to his basement to see them, for obvious reasons as stated above from other people. After reading all the comments above, this is very upsetting. It only confirms not to trust anyone any more. Very sad. But our puppy is fine and is growing.

Let me see the owner being an active military member was relocated outside the USA. Since the economy is horrible the family had a difficult time selling their home and hoped to return to that home upon the end of their relocation so they decided to contact a realtor who would find a suitable tenant to rent the home until they could return to the USA. I think they did things right and used a realtor to make sure that the tenant would be background checked and an appropriate person to rent their home. So while they go on their way to serve their country and protect our freedoms a loser who passed all background checks moves their CRIMINAL son into the basement. Mind you this is August of 2012 and by Oct 2012 the owner was notified of some issues regarding dogs in the house. Authorities were contacted to remove this person from their home since it was stated that no pets were to allowed in her home. No one thought this was a puppy selling idiot. As a landlord you cannot just show up without notice and when a scheduled visit was made to investigate there were no dogs in the home. Authorities held back in order to catch the perpetrators. If the so called puppy buyers would have reported what they had seen the investigation may have ended sooner. I guess once you get a sweet pup in your hands then to hell with the other dogs that are left behind. It wasn't fun watching sick puppies be put down right before your eyes. Quit speculating it isn't very becoming.
