On Saturday morning, a group of 150 volunteers—all residents or staff members at Parkville's Oak Crest retirement community—did their part to help feed hungry people worldwide by partnering with the nonprofit Stop Hunger Now.

Jeff Getek, an Oak Crest spokesman, said volunteers assembled more than 13,000 meals to feed children in orphanages and schools in developing countries over the course of two 75-minute shifts.

Events and activities at Oak Crest allowed volunteers to raise a total of $3,349.58 and, all said and done, they donated 13,396 meals to Stop Hunger Now.

Getek said in a statement that the event was part of a celebration of National Volunteer Appreciation Week.
