Owings Mills Man faces 46-Count Mortgage Fraud Indictment

Prosecutor says additional charges are expected.

A 45-year-old Owings Mills man find himself charged with felony theft and other crimes in a 46-count indictment and a county prosecutor said more charges are likely.

Rodney Getlan was charged Thursday in Baltimore County Circuit Court with felony theft, mortgage fraud, operating as a credit service without a license and other related charges. He's being held at the Baltimore County Detention Center in lieu of $500,000 bail.

Getlan is accused of stealing mortgage payments from nine customers of a loan modification business he ran between January 2009 and January 2012, according to court records.

The alleged thefts resulted in two homeowners losing their homes to foreclosures.

During that time, Getlan is alleged to have told the customers that they had been approved to have their mortgages modified. Homeowners believed their payments were going to lenders. Instead, the checks were deposited into accounts controlled by Getlan, according to court records.

Getlan used multiple bank accounts and fictitious company names and email addresses and fraudulent documents in his scheme. He also allegedly changed the contact information for the nine homeowners in order to prevent them from being notified of missed payments and impending foreclosures, according to court records.

Prosecutors estimate that Getlan stole more than $100,000 from his victims not including two owner-occupied homes that were sold in foreclosure auctions. Three other homeowners could lose their homes in similar foreclosure proceedings.

If convicted of all counts, Getlan could receive a maximum sentence 417 years in prison.

In February, Getlan pleaded to felony theft related to his loan modification business. He received a two-year suspended sentence and 18 months supervised probation.

He also is charged with burglary and theft in a separate case. He is scheduled for arraignment on those charges on March 27.

Lippe, the prosecutor in the Getlan case, said there are at least four-dozen additional victims. Those cases could result in additional charges against Getlan.

The victims in the cases live in states stretching from Maine to Virginia.

"They're all over the country," Lippe said. "It didn't matter to (Getlan). It's almost overwhelming."

He's already pled guilty to felony theft related to his business scam. I think it's fair to assume that while he might not be guilty of all of these 46 new counts he's likely guilty of enough of them to get him some serious prison time. My guess is that he'll cut a deal because it appears the prosecution has him very well hooked.

It's a shame, this man has been fooling and scamming anyone and everyone he can, for many years now. It's all finally catching up with him and he has ruined many lives, including that of his children and family.

Rodney should be ashamed of himself for the people he hurt. He was my insurance agent for a few years until I caught wind of his "business practices" and I cut him loose. I feel bad for his family and children, and all the victims of his crime. The past and present evidence seems clear that Rodney is just a simple crook that could careless about anybody but himself. He truly deserves what is coming to him. Anybody that stands by him or tries to defend him should be laughed at. I will miss his humorous Facebook posts, but that's about all I will miss about this piece of sh!t.

His whole life he's bullied people and gotten enjoyment at the expense of others. It's insidious what he did to others that entrusted him. If his wife has any intelligence or love for her kids, she'll run from him and find someone who can raise her children with a decent value system. Kids are resilient - they will recover. There's still time for them to learn how to live a decent life - as long as their father isn't a part of it.

Fortunately for his family they will not need to run from him b/c he will be hanging with "Bubba" for quite sometime. He isn't getting off so easy this time and the severity of his crimes will keep him where he belongs for many years. You have to feel for his family as they are victims as well.

Rodney's wife, Jill is just as guilty. She has been spending the loot as fast as Rodney has been steeling it! Don't tell me that his wife didn't know what he did for a living. No more Ruth's Chris steaks for the Getlans. Rodney has been a lifetime thief. He would rob his parent's friends house while they were away for vacations by using the key to their house that his parents were trusted with. Rodney even took a credit card out under his mother's name while she was on her death bed, spent it to the max, then when the credit card company tried to collect their past due balance, Rodney told them that his mother had died and that he wasnt responsible for her debts!!

Whoever is writing this you are correct about Rodney except for his wife. She had no idea what he was doing with this recent business. He has been lying to her for their whole marriage and stole money and other things from her as well. He gave her money to spend and she never used credit cards. He took out thousands in her name that she was unaware of. She has been trying to divorce him for three years since she found out all he had done in the insurance business. You do not deserve an explanation, obviously you are a judgmental person that has no idea what you are talking about. Jill has been through hell with his bullying and alienation of their finances. Stop being a hater and get YOUR facts straight!!!

Not buying it.

And she has no problem spending the "tainted money" which she may or may not know anything about.

After all she did spend last week in FL on vacation right?

They do still live in a very expensive house in Reisterstown right? I'm sure if she was 100% pure innocent and felt bad enough she'd sell her house and move into an apartment and give the earnings back to the victims.

But I'm sure she has no plans of doing that.

Hey "HONEST" and I am SURE you know ALL of Jill's personal finances right? You are 100% CERTAIN that the money she spent to go to Florida was tainted right? Of course you do. You absolutely are 100% sure, before opening your pie hole, and judging her that you have gone through her books, and checked each and every deposit and withdraw to make sure it was not Rodney's correct? You KNOW without a DOUBT that any penny she spends tomorrow will not be HER penny, because you of COURSE know where ALL money in her life comes from right? AND we all know KNOW of course if someone in your family was guilty, and you STILL had your own, loot, you would absolutely move into an apartment anyway right?!!? Of course you would!!! And you would give money back to victims, even if it was gone, and you had nothing to do with the fraud correct? of COURSE you would.....We are So PROUD of how you have thought through your statements....they are really SO logical and add up....G-D, I mean, we all wish we had your skills to make great "guesses" about what's going on in someone's life. Hey if you buy that the wife (even if distant) had no idea that this guy was stealing hundreds of thousands and believe at no time did she benefit from the money that's on you.

It's obvious that the family isnt doing "poorly" when she's out of state on vacation and still living in a 500K dollar house while the people that were scammed are still putting their life back together.

But hey....I'm sure she had no idea and all the money that was rolling in never went to her....because they were "trying to seperate" over a 3-4 period..um...it takes a bit over a year to sepearte/divorce in MD.

Take your friendship gossip elsewhere.

I'm Jewish. I know him from high school. He was a horrible person then. So mean - mean to others and so mean to me. He is one of my worst memories. He was a gambler back then, but for whatever reason, he had his supportive clique around him (who were also mean to me). So much arrogance even at 15 years of age. This has nothing to do with ethnicity, race, religion, or income. There are good people and bad people in every category I mentioned. He does not represent an entire category of people - an entire belief system or religion. We teach our children diversity, inclusion, tolerance, acceptance, compassion for everyone. Their religious beliefs and skin color are unimportant. What matters is how people treat others, and being committed to being a part of something bigger than yourself so that you leave this world in better shape than when you got here. I'm truly sorry for any pain that Rodney caused you. I wish you peace.

I was trying to make a point with Rocoppola that Rodney's actions have nothing to do with his religious affiliation. The fact that he is Jewish is completely irrelevant. Clearly Rocoppola is anti-semitic.

While Rodney was a felon and what he was dong was by no means the right thing to do, he cared about his daughters so much. You all will probably sit here and say "well if he cared he should have been doing what he did" but if you knew Rodney, you could see it in his face how much he loved those girls. He would do anything for them and all he was concerned about was being a good father. Not all of you know Rodney and his family like that, but I do and he was a genuinely good family man.

Rodney Getlan scammed us for 27,000 dollars and i pray that God deal with him in his own way. Me and my family is battling to save our home. I hope we will get our money back. For you to be a so-called good father and family man, how can you do that to other people that loves and care for their daughters and sons and want what best for them. You took our trust away and you should be punish by the courts and a much higher court. As God is my witness you will pay. The bible says whatever you do to the least of mines it will be done to you. So you scam us and someone is going to do the same to you and your family. You are a lier and a cheat and may God have mercy upon your soul.

He had a whole side to him that I was unaware of and although we had not been close in recent years, I still saw him on occasion. He was fun to be around and was a good friend in that he would be here when you needed him ie attending funerals and bday calls and so on. However, I did have any idea of his illicit Activities and when I did, I wanted nothing more to do with him. I do believe for what it's worth that Jill was unaware of his activities at least until it hit the fan. I am truly sorry for his victims and feel for them. Thanks to Rodney’s greedy ways, many people had to declare bk and it will take them years, if ever to recover from this financial nightmare. Luckily, he’s been locked up and if I’m not mistaken, it’s for good. His children and his parents must be so ashamed. I too knew Rodney years ago, and yes he was a bully then. But a thief is a different story. . I’m not so sure about his wife’s innocence. I think she had to have known something.. Either way, she seems to have moved on rather quickly. I would think that after that long of a marriage/relationship a person would take a little time to gather herself together, especially given the circumstances. But she did not. She’s got a new man who probably pays for everything. I don’t think she ever worked a hard day in her life! Is she working now? How does she afford to go out and do all that she does? What sacrifices has she had to make? She should be forced to sell that house, her car, etc…The profits should be distributed to some of the victims. Fruit of the poison tree. I hope those that lost so much can come out of this and hopefully even further along!
