A Parkville comic book shop is planning to raise funds for a good cause this weekend.
Collectors Corner, at 7911 Harford Road, will donate 10 percent of their total sales of toys & statues this weekend to the American Red Cross in honor of the victims of the theater shooting in Aurora, CO last month during the premiere of The Dark Knight.
"We're just trying to do what we can to help," said Collectors Corner owner Randy Myers. "I felt almost an obligation as part of the comics community to do something."
Myers said that he began planning the fundraiser nearly a month ago, but other events at the store have delayed the event.
"I wanted to do something while it was still fresh in people's minds," Myers said. "We needed to do something before the summer was out. Donating to the Red Cross in their honor was the best thing on short notice."
Myers said he got that idea after talking to the owner of Heroes & Villains comics in Tucson, AZ about a fundraiser they recently put together for the shooting victims.
The fundraiser runs Aug. 18 and 19 and for the duration of the event toys and status are offered at a 40 percent discount.
"I'm trying to involve the community in positive things—that's something I try to to do and I don't want to lose sight of that. It's important to me to give back as much as possible," he said.
