The victim of such a crazed man could very well have been an innocent person who happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time.
That person should have had, if desired, the exact same methods to defend themselves from such an attack as the police officer had at his disposal.

This guy was obviously a threat to society...or atleast this one officer. And you say it should be legal for him to carry a handgun?

Jump on stories where innocent people are vicitimed and their lifes are placed in danger.

There is a lesson here. When a police officer identifies himself and gives you commands, you obey them. You do not advance on a police officer with a weapon. It is that simple.

No man will try to scare or attack an officer with a knife and that be considered deadly when the officer himself would have deadly firearm. In that case the man would not have been in the right state or just have an illness who lost there way from home and let's just say if he would have had been schizophrenic.

Don Julio, or perhaps the man thought he could hurt or kill the Police officer. Obviously a mistake on his part. The officer tried to use non lethal force but for whatever reason the Taser malfunctioned and he was forced to use deadly force.

I don't think I said that I'm just stating it would be stupid of a person to even think they could cause an officer harm knife versus gun and a shot to kill. There should have been a warning shot even though the taser gun was ineffective. Could have been he had alot of clothing on to cause it not to penetrate the skin and there is no reason the officer had to shoot to kill although it might not have been intentional.

So what your saying is its ok to shoot/kill a sick/mental or disordered human being that he did not know what he is doing and a shot to the chest is unnecessary. The other thing is it was a little pen/pocket knife.

Don Julio, BCoPD officers are not allowed to fire warning shots. According to this article the officer ordered the man to drop the knife and he refused.

Warning shot? This is not cowboys TV.. Modern Police Officers are trained, & for good reason, never to fire a warning shot when you are in danger. You may not survive...Shoot for center mass always, that is the rule. Do you really know how dangerous it has become out on the street?.People sure are dumb when it comes down to real life.........

So if your a trained officer a little pocket knife puts you in danger? Just watch the news at 11. I'm not up for this debate. I said what I had to say.

Don Julio, I guess you are saying that a "possibly" mentally ill person with a little pocket knife is not capable of hurting/killing a trained officer? From what this article indicated along with what has been on TV it sounds to me like the officer did what he/she was trained to do and that is he/she tried to have the man drop his weapon and when he/she took measures to use non-leathal force which failed he/she resorted to deadly force which worked. Are you now saying the officer should have done a mental evaluation on the man in those few seconds/minutes? What exactly should the officer have done? I'm thrilled the officer is ok!

Come on Man! Does anyone really think the police officer had time to inspect the knife, evaluate the attacker's mental status, have a chit chat with him, taser the attacker, troubleshoot the taser to diagnose its faulty condition, and fire a warning shot all at 3 in the morning behind a gas station by himself in the dark of night? The taser shot was the warning shot. Stop watching 1950's police reruns and think realistically. Most people would crap their pants before even reaching for the taser if placed in the same situation. I'm thankful that there are people still crazy enough to join the police force and work crazy shifts so that I can call 911 at 3 in the morning for help. Check out the story last week where an off-duty cop was shot by a party-goer standing in the middle of the street at 3 a.m. These nuts are out there, and if the cops aren't the first to get the shot off, they will be the first to hit the ground. Get real man! BTW I'm not a cop.

I know this kid&I grew up skateboarding with him.I haven't seen him in years but I do believe he was under the influence of subtances and also suffered from mental illness.its sad he was killed but I believe he chose death by cop.only the cop knows what happened and I believe he followes protocal but on the same hand I'm sure he could've ojust shot him in the leg&called for back up.

I'm an ER nurse....the problem here is the mental health community. There aren't enough treatment centers. All of the admission beds are always full. These people spend(not kidding) days in an ER waiting...not getting treated....waiting for a bed. Now a good percentage of these patients aren't always a clear or I should say accurate diagnosis....ie schizophrenic or bipolar. They are drug addicts....they don't want to get clean....just eant off the streets until they get their next check. I think the field of psychiatry has gotten lazy and gives everyone a diagnosis. This then does not leave any room for actual patients to get treatment. Then that leaves another small percentage who can't afford their meds and street drugs become cheaper and they self medicate. I'm not saying this at all relates to the man that was shot. Nut for gods sake after all of the recent slayings when is anyone gonna wake up and realize the conversation we should be having. Oh and this man.....don't pull a knife when the police ask you to stop loitering where its probably posted to not do so. That is all..

The cops are where the rubber meets the road here. The cop who deals with it faces all sorts of Monday morning quarterbacks who think they know better. Better to aim your barbs at politicians (and the folks who elect them) who refuse to properly fund appropriate mental health facilities, some mental health advocates who think the rights of people with mental disorders outweigh the right of society to be safe, the insurance companies who look to cut corners wherever they can, etc. Lots of blame to go around, but whenever a shooting like this happens, the best we get is "Why couldn't the cop shoot his hand?" or "Why did the cop have to use a gun when the perp only had a knife?" Please get real, people.
