Positive Parenting: Lead By Example

Leading by example is one of the best things that a parent can do for their child.

More often than not parents find themselves trying to encourage positivity through having great role models in the lives of their children. But in today’s society, all too often children seek out role models through what they see on television, in the movies and on the internet. This can easily become an issue for a parent who is trying to maintain a sense of balance in their parenting through positivity.

So the question arises, how can I ensure that my child has positive role models?

The answer is simple: lead by example.  To be a leader can be a rather daunting task, and leading by example can also prove challenging, but if you have a “child-first” and day-forward mindset, you will soon find that you are your child’s best and most positive role model.

Contrary to popular belief, a role model is not perfect. They are only human. When you lead by example, you give your child someone readily accessible to look up to for support and inspiration. As you ease into being a good role model for your child, just remember that there will be times when you make a mistake, and that's okay.  As a role model you are there to support your child and encourage them in a positive way.

One of the things that you could start doing is to make a laundry list of the positive and not so positive qualities that you possess. Make a vow to stride towards perfecting the not so positive qualities not only for you but for your child. Always keep in mind that children learn through what is said and unsaid as well as through our errors and mishaps. They tend to watch even when we as parents think they aren’t.
