School Staff Receiving Active Shooter Training
The Baltimore County Police Homeland Security section is providing the school system with training on what to be aware of in case of a school shooting.
The Baltimore County Police Department is collaborating with the school system to provide staff with more training in dealing with potential school shooting situations.
The heightened concern comes after an attack at Perry Hall High School and a gun incident at Stemmers Run Middle School earlier in the school year.
"We are working on making sure that the leadership of the schools, principals, fully understand our protocols," said Dale Rauenzahn, executive director of school safety and security. "We have trained for many years on the active shooter scenario."
Baltimore County police spokeswoman Elise Armacost said situational awareness that leads to a school shooting scenario and response training is now available to administrators by the department's homeland security section.
Rauenzahn said once school leadership has been trained, it will be passed along throughout the sytem.
On February 20, all school principals received the first training, which educated them on situational awareness and overall active shooter process. In March, they will have a scenario based training to demonstrate the appropriate responses from the school, school system and emergency responders.
Still, Rauenzahn stresses that students and staff have already been trained in implementing the four universal responses to emergency situations—evacuation, alert status, lockdown and severe weather safe area.
"This was demonstrated at Perry Hall High when students and staff used the evacuation and lockdown universal responses to respond to that emergency situation," he said.

This is the kind of crap that is going to lead to more problems in schools. On a daily basis, most principals are either hidden away in their offices or being pulled out of the building for meetings. How are they supposed to LEAD in an active shooter situation when they are either not there or hiding out in their office. When I signed my contract as a teacher, I do not recall it saying that I had to put my life on the line to protect the school from an active shooter and be trained and prepared to do so. Don't get me wrong, I will do what is necessary to protect my students in this type of situation but I am a father first and have to think about my children as well. Right now, every school in Baltimore County should have at least some sort of Security Personnel or a School Resource Officer. We continue to be reactive instead of proactive. Let's call on our school board and Superintendent to make school security even more of a priority and get more security at each school in the county NOW.

I work in a middle school and when the principal is in the building she is rarely in her office....she is walking the hallways and visiting classrooms....in fact, all the administrators are out of the office for at least 90% of the school day.

Evets, thank you for one of the most common-sense post I have seen ANYWHERE since Sandy Hook. I too agree one school shooting is too many, but this sky is falling attitude and the attendant "disarm everyone/make principals carry guns/put armed cops in every school" hysteria has been over the top.

While I think that the training is a good thing, perhaps the County police should concentrate on protecting the County rather than the Homeland.

We all know there is a potential for something happening in a school. A shooting incident may never happen again ( in Baltimore county ) but it is evident it can happen.Setting up safeguards is just one step to keep our children safer. Just hope these "safeguards " are not tested by disturbed individuals. At least they will be in place.

Evets missed a big stat. 4600 young people between the age of 10 and 24 die by their own hand every hear, according to the CDC. We don't have a gun crisis, we have a MENTAL HEALTH crisis. A few of these 4600 try to make headlines, but think about it, each year, more than died in 9-11 take their own life! Since 9-11, that's enough to fill a major league stadium. That is the crisis that should be dealt with. If that issue is fixed, we would not need bureaucrats learning how to deal with active shooter situations. We would not need gun control, we might just make this world a little safer.

Doug, you are right on the mental health issue. Sadly some want to pretend it doesn't exist. Others are so concerned about privacy that they think it trumps community safety. We need to do whatever we can to keep guns out of the hands of people with mental health and anger issues.
