Del. Burns: Support Obama, Oppose Gay Marriage

Del. Emmett Burns, a Baltimore County Democrat, says he has changed his mind and will support the re-election of Barack Obama even though the president announced last week he supports same-sex marriage.

Burns, a minister at Rising Sun Baptist Church in Woodlawn, announced last week that he could not support Obama after the president announced his position on the issue of same-sex marriage.

In an interview Thursday, the civil rights activist said his initial decision was based on emotion.

"I was shocked and surprised that (Obama) would make such an announcement," Burns said. "That was certainly the backdrop to my initial reaction."

Afterwards, Burns said he received calls from around the country urging him to reconsider.

Burns said his time as a civil rights activist in Mississippi weighed heavily on his decision to reconsider.

"Many of my friends and colleagues died to get the right to vote," Burns said. "It would be impossible for me to stay home. Someone is going to be president anyway and we should have a say in that."

The delegate said he "does not trust" Mitt Romney, the presumptive Republican presidential candidate.

Instead, Burns said he will now encourage others to split the ticket and vote for Obama and against Maryland's recently passed same-sex marriage law, which he said he expects will be on the November referendum ballot.

"Gay marriage is an abomination," Burns said. "It's the worst thing that can happen to this nation and this state. It's very divisive."

That's because Burns is racist. He's supporting obama because thats the only reason he has for supporting him.

John, you don't do any service to your stance by calling one a racist. You only give others who have another view to challenge the validity of your comment.

I don't support the president's agenda either, but I think you could have chosen a more appropriate word to sum up your point of view.

"Gay marriage is an abomination," Burns said. "It's the worst thing that can happen to this nation and this state. It's very divisive."

Interesting that after making a statement like this, he could turn around and support the leader of the nation who in his eyes would be abominable and divisive. Yet he says he doesn't trust Romney?
This fellow has some serious hypocrisy going on here.

I'm opposed to gay marriage on religious grounds. However, it's my religion that prohibits gay marriage in my church. That's as far as it should go. The state should only be concerned if its a contract between consenting adults, that's it. Having the state ban gay marriage now means the state can mandate gay marriage later. Religions should have the sole authority to determone who is married inside the church, the state should stay out of it either way.

Reverend -- It's called SEPARATION OF CHURCH AND STATE. The President is not insisting that your CHURCH perform marriage ceremonies. It just didn't work to legally term it as "civil unions" in many areas as to the rights of ALL couples. PLEASE change your view. It's not affecting YOUR CHURCH. Fully support President Obama, please.

"The President is not insisting that your CHURCH perform marriage ceremonies."

Yet. Obamacare initially insisted that churches provide their employees birth control against their religious beliefs. The administration caved, sort of, but only because it's an election year.

I remember a few years back it was patriotic to question the president and the government. Now we're supposed to just get in line and support them? What happened?

The bottom line here is that he supports Obama because he is black. Otherwise he would have cast him aside. As to the other poster, supporting your own race because soley of race is in fact racism. Look up the definition of racism when you get a chance. If all these people want to support gay marriage they can move to europe.

"Hatred or intolerance of another race or other races".
Again, supporting your own kind does not makes you a racist.

ddbs00, this is a bogus issue meant simply to drum up the Republican base. 28 states, including Texas and North Carolina already mandate that all state insurance plans excpt for churches themselves have to provide birth control. In fact, the bill voted for by Sen. Brown and signed by then Gov. Romney mandates that the basic coverage by any employer other than the churches themselves have to provide abortions in their basic coverage. If you work in a Catholic school in Massachussetts, your basic coverage is required to include abortions. It's a bogus issue.

Paul you are undoubtedly the biggest imbecile to post on a blog or a patch. Over 95 percent of blacks voted for obama. There is not a 95 to 5 percent ratio of dems to repubs in registered black voters. Many of them openly admitted to voting for him simply because he is black. That is racism. For you to casually throw that accusation at anyone that does not support the policies of Obama shows how much of a total waste of dna you truly are on this planet.

There are too many people breaking the constitution. It's time for all to understand what this country was setup for relating to our important document. The separation of church and state. My ancestors had a hand in setting up the constitution and how people ignore this important document is sad. Those who wish to use the political process to speak of something that is religious should be taxed, That would help lower the debt of the country. At the same time the government should stay out of anything pertaining to religion. The waste of manpower and especially money for state governments voting not to let people practice any religion is wrong. Let the churches decide who would marry who. Delegates who are in any government should abstain from voting on anything pertaining to religion.

is this simple if your against gay marriage and the health care bill or either one then you MUST vote against Obama. He has already said he will redo the health care bill no matter what the Supreme court says and without having to run again he will have the bill kick in 2013 the new one so it will be to short for the court to rule on the second bill. He had the first kick in 2014 to make sure costs couldn't be held against his reelection. If you don't care care about either which is okay that is your right vote for him.

kevin, that is interesting logic. Against gay marriage, vote for the Mormon wearing magic underwear, not the Christian. If you are against healthcare, vote for the guy whose original Idea it was. No other issues to consider? Intriguing way to vote.

By the way, I am equally indifferent to Mormons, Christians, Muslims, or any other religion for that matter as long as they keep it out of government.

Buck, we agree again! Nothing will change in this country for the foreseeable future. Unless one part has full control of all three branches and a filibuster proof Senate the country will continue to banter back and forth until it fails. I still think humans blow the planet up sooner than later anyway. Depressing stuff?!

I believe divisions on immigration, abortion, unions, women's rights, healthcare, guns, taxes, etc are permanent. Although the 1% in theory would lose because of headcount, their ability to manipulate legislation and opinions through the money they have will keep the status quo intact. Who or what is to blame? Anyone care? I believe it was 24/7 news, the Internet, and the Citizens United decision. Add those three up and you get a huge propaganda machine of talking heads.

Accordint to Paul, this is the solution. We demonize people in this country that have actualized the american dream, and have become financially rich. We call them the 1 percent, but neglect to add that they pay the bills for over 50 percent of our tax revenue. Drop down and 9 percent, to make it 10, and you now have over 70 percent of our tax revenue. Gee Paul, if someone pays over 50 percent of the bill, should they not have a large voice in how it is constructed? Didn't your hero Gore invent the internet? My bad, i keep forgetting that you live in a world where the fact that 50 percent of citizens that do not pay any income taxes should have complete government assistance and more than their fair say on how tax revenue should be spent. Your president and savior had control of 2 of the 3 branches of government and passed a stimulus bill that went to fund democratic special interests. Soon he will be removed and then you will claim aggrieved status as all left-wing ideologues.

The president had control of all three branches of government for the first 2 years of his presidency - he passed pretty much everything he pleased until the Democrat party got tossed out of the house in 2010 by an angry electorate. The top 1% of money earners pay about 37% of all income tax, and the top 10% pay 70% according to the IRS (2009 - the most recent data available).

We now have almost 47 million people on food stamps, over 8% unemployment after 3.5 years of fiscally irresponsible policies, and 5 trillion more in debt (an increase of 50% of the TOTAL debt the US has had since its inception!!! in 3.5 years!). George Bush has been out of office for 3.5 years now but the President and the loony left keeps blaming him for for everything short of the weather (actually, with global warming I guess they blame him for that too...)

The Wash Post and other MSM outlets are doing everything they can to make people forget Obama's horrible record on jobs, the economy, foreign policy, energy policy and lack of fiscal discipline. Thankfully, more people are paying attention now with all of the extra time they have on their hands from being unemployed so hopefully they will see that the Hope and Change hoopla from 2008 was just crap and that we have a guy in the White House who is in waaaay over his head and who only knows how to campaign as opposed to run the country. God help us if he does not get tossed out in November.

I believe that if only 50% pay income tax now...we are half way there...the income tax should not exist as we know it....Constitutionally it should not exist at all, at least 50% are getting it right....
The antics of our government don't really count anymore, as I believe the 1% to be above the president in terms of power...no question that the 1% need to be snuffed by the American citizens before the restoration begins.
1% of the World Trade Center structure was damaged by the airplane crashing into it.....that amounted to total failure as the structures collapsed. Now it's being rebuilt even better than it was before....minus thousands of lives... the 1% need to be broken in a similar fashion...minus the violence before the re building can begin.
For now we are stuck jibbin and jabbin about it...

That was sheer brilliance Buck. See, if we get rid of the 1%, then all capital investment that affects retirement accounts and makes wealth for even those of the middle class will vanish. Next, we get the rich to leave the planet, and then who will create jobs and wealth? Better yet Buck, we need to get rid of the 85% that make more than minimum wage. That creates income equality. Also Buck, we need to snuff the property owners, and create one class of people. We will call ourselves "unitarian americans", and we will all wake the same wage regardless of skills and talents. Next, all unitarian americans will be given equal calories, equal liquids, and not a drop more, not even for pregnant women or growing children. Then we will all be given x amount of articles of clothing, no more. Not even if you are a painter, sewer worker, or garbage disposable technician. We will all be equal, no having more posessions than your neighbor. No bigger tv than your neighbor. Instead we will snuff all out until a John Galt arrives and saves the few.

Escariot, Until we bottom out we can not strengthen our country.
The process that is moving us into constant failure is current...public apathy plays a huge role here, in that when faith is lost, the rulers are stronger..world rulers mind you.
To believe that all is well regarding current retirement accounts is foolish.
Our Country is destine to failure with the current two party system behaving badly.
Because the vast majority of Americans are apathetic and do not participate, the light at the end of the tunnel seems pretty dim...
You seem to have the answers...why not try using your real name for a refreshing change.... Its going to take a revolution...

@billy-just so you and I have our facts straight, Democrats had a 60 vote majority for 13 months, not 24 months as you state. Due to the lock step movement of the Republicans, McConnell could count on getting all 40 of his minority to vote with him on almost everything. Reid had to deal with Blue Dog Democrats who would not vote with him.

How much money you pay in income tax is directly proportional to how many votes you can buy. However, at the ballot box 1%'s still get one vote.

When you make the insincere debt and unemployment numbers argument is when you lose me, that works for the base, not for people who actually examine data in context.

All that said, have a great day, we will never agree on the meaning of the data.

If you want to teach hate and bigotry at the pulpit, go ahead. But trying to sway votes from the altar is wrong, and your mysticism should not be brought onto the House floor. Government or god, bible or ballot...SEPERATE!!!
I am proud that Obama is leading this country in forward thinking, not keeping the same beliefs held by shepherds and farmers from thousands of years ago.. Close your bible, turn off Fox news and Welcome to the 21st century.

One thing we can agree on, the country is $16 trillion in debt and the Euro is about to go south and that garbage will float to our shores just as we are beginning to see the remnants of the Japanese Tsunami debris showing up. The result will be a global recession.

When the gas prices fall so does the economy.

Buck and Tim, thank you. I know who Steve is. I am his obsessive/compulsive target. He never offers a point of view other then denigrate. He has little knowledge of any subject and that is why he cannot articulate his point of view.

Many U.S. banks have invested money overseas in the Euro economy before the bubble burst. If Europe goes into a deep recession or as some are calling a depression in Greece, then I think the banks on these shores will also take of loss regarding the trouble overseas, as the world is now a global market.

Greece is 160% of GDP, while Germany, the backbone of the Euro is at 80% of GDP. France is planning on stimulus spending (money they don't have) and are counting on Germany to bail them out. The Germans are thrifty, while France is the land of the entitled. Germany is saying no and demands France balance its budget. The U.S. is already at a 100% of GDP.

The downside to falling gas prices indicates the demand is low and that translates into an economic slowdown. People are not driving to purchase goods, go out to eat or see a movie while companies are not shipping goods due to the lack of demand.

People may be able to afford the gas but little else and therein lies the problem. Sort of why Facebook is seeing a drawback on it's stock. GM already pulled their account claiming no one was clicking on the adds.

How does that growth impact the current debt of $16 trillion? How does that 2.2% impact the interest on the deficit? What percent of the debt as related to the interest on the deficit can be impacted.

How ludicrous of a statement to say that a very successful businessman doesn't know anything about the economy? He earned his money through solid entrepreneurship. "Got lucky" refers to the lottery. As I said Mr. Cuban holds a tab bit more creditability than a person who calls himself - Steve.
