Baltimore County to Offer Flu, Pneumonia Vaccines to Seniors

Baltimore County senior centers will hold clinics in September and October.

The Baltimore County Department of Aging will hold flu shot clinics across the county later this summer and into the fall season.

The partnership with Maxim Healthcare will provide flu shots at no cost to Medicare B, Bravo and Aetna participants. Pneumonia shots will also be available at no cost to Medicare B and Bravo participants, according to a statement from Baltimore County officials.

Other individuals can receive the flu shot for $30 and the pneumonia vaccine for $70. Patients must bring their original Medicare card or health insurance card and a photo identification card. Payment must be cash or checks made payable to Maxim Healthcare Services.

Influenza (the flu) is a contagious respiratory illness caused by a variety of influenza viruses, according to the statement. It can cause mild to severe illness, and at times can lead to death. Some people, such as older people, young children and people with certain health conditions are at high risk for serious flu complications.

The 2013-2014 flu vaccine will protect against three different flu viruses: A/California/7/2009 (H1N1) virus; A(H3N2) virus antigenically like the cell-propagated prototype virus A/Victoria/361/2011; and the B/Massachusetts/2/2012-like virus, according to the statement.
