Councilmembers Support Expanded Hours For Loch Raven Library

Fifth District Councilman David Marks and Sixth District Councilwoman Cathy Bevins both support extended hours at the library.

Elected officials are pushing the Baltimore County Public Library to expand hours at a neighborhood branch.

Fifth District Councilman David Marks recently wrote to Baltimore County Public Library director Jim Fish asking that the Loch Raven Library have its hours expanded to match those of other branches around the county.

A .pdf copy of Marks' letter is attached to this article.

Currently Loch Raven Library is open from 9 a.m.-9 p.m. Mondays and Wednesdays and from 9 a.m.-5:30 p.m. Tuesdays, Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays.

Most other branches in the county are open from 9 a.m.-9 p.m. Monday-Thursday and form 9 a.m.-5:30 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays. A few branches, such as Towson and Perry Hall, also keep Sunday hours from 1-5 p.m.

"We would like to see it offer the same hours as other branches around the county," Marks said.

In a letter to Fish, Marks wrote that attaining so-called "full-service status" has been

"While the county does not have the resources to renovate the library right now, full-service status is a step in the right direction. I believe that this area of Baltimore County deserves the same  access to library services as all other communities," Marks wrote in the letter.

Marks and Sixth District Councilwoman Cathy Bevins have each mentioned expanding hours at the Loch Raven Library during budget hearings for two years running, according to the letter.

Do you believe that Loch Raven Library should have expanded hours to match other branches? Tell us in the comments.

A big thanks to the council-members (Cathy and David) and Director Fish for their continued interest and investment into the library, especially when budgets continue to be tight. This library continues to be a great resource in the community, and the addition of a librarian and expansion to full time hours would only enhance the great services it already provides. No more having to wait to drop off or pick up books, and two extra days to schedule evening meetings!

Thank you Mr. Marks and Ms. Bevins! Area residents depend on the Loch Raven Library for easy access to library services delivered by the wonderful staff there. Expanded hours will help meet this demand and allow the library to schedule other related activities and programs in the evenings so that working residents can participate. As our communities strive to be more "walkable" expanded hours will be even more important in the future.
