Vintage Parkville-Overlea: Place of Worship

Can you guess where in the greater Parkville-Overlea area this photo was taken?

It's hard to write about this week's photograph without naming the church in the photo.

At the time the picture was taken, back in 1904, this church stood in Parkville—today, a church of (mostly) the same name still stands there but it looks pretty much not-at-all-the-same.

The photograph above was downloaded from the Baltimore County Public Library Legacy Web photo collection. It was originally taken by Mrs. Douglas Horstman.

"The frame structure was built in 1895 to replace an earlier stone chapel built in 1839. It was replaced by another structure in 1954," according to a description on the library website.

Can you guess where this photo was taken? Leave your best guess and share your memories of Parkville-Overlea in the comments.

It's directly across from my computer shop at Hiss and Harford, which back around when this photo was taken was the neighborhood ice cream parlor, Class' Ice Cream, my guess is Hiss United Methodist.

My husband grew up in Parkville. He said it is Hiss United Methodist Church. He always went to Classes for the best chocolate ice cream he ever had!!

You are both absolutely correct. It is, in fact, Hiss United Methodist Church—at the time the photo was taken it was just Hiss Methodist Chapel.
Old photos are awesome. I love getting a look at the neighborhood's history. Do you guys have any photos of your own to share? I'd love to see them. Email nick.gestido@patch.com

Apparently my last comment was flagged. I'll clean it up: Surprise, Surprise, the offer is onlyRead More good for NEW customers. Yet I've been a "loyal" Comcast customer for over 15 years now, never late on a payment nor complained when my service failed or I've had an issue that wasn't resolved without me taking "above and beyond" steps. Comcast is a juggernaut that just doesn't care if once it gets your business. You get locked in and then are stuck until your "contract" expires. Mine expires 2/22/2014 or I could cancel and pay $200. I'm going to hold out and then cut cable all together and just have Internet service so my Rokus work. But Verizon FIOS is looking better by the day.
