Early Morning Bacon and Beer at the Barn

Over a hundred people turn out for event that is part debauchery, part fundraiser.

The masses gathered in the pre-dawn hours at The Barn in Carney — they were united in purpose: to eat bacon and drink beer before the sun rose.

The Barn was the site of a live radio broadcast of the 98 Rock morning show with hosts Mickey, Amelia & Speigel for the "Bacon & Beer: Holiday Edition", a yearly promotion put on by the local radio station.

The event has been held at the Barn for at least the past 4 years according to part owner Pat Kerrigan.  The bar opened its doors at 5:30 a.m., and by 6:45 a crowd of well over 100 people had gathered to partake in the free breakfast buffet, and have a few cold ones.

"We open the doors at five-thirty and start serving alcohol at six [a.m.]," said Kerrigan.  He added that the Barn would be open throughout the day today, until closing time at 2 a.m. on Saturday.

According to Kerrigan, the Barn has been the site of the yearly event since Kirk, Mark & Lopez hosted the radio station's morning show years ago.  "It's a pretty big day for us here," he said.

Sure, there was a great deal of eating and drinking to be done; but the event wasn't all about debauchery, it was also a fundraiser for the Special Olympics Maryland.

98 Rock radio host Mickey Cucchiella is currently trying to raise a half-million dollars for Special Olympics Maryland through a campaign called Drive for Five. Station-themed t-shirts were on sale at the event, with proceeds from their sale going to Special Olympics Maryland.
