Savers Grand Opening Slated for Thursday

The national thrift chain is opening a location in a space at Joppa Heights that previously housed Giant Food.

After staying vacant since 2007, a space at Joppa Heights may once again see a bustle of activity when Savers celebrates its grand opening Thursday.

"We are committed to offering fresh products every day and working with local nonprofits," said Fikru Beshah, the store's manager.

The national thrift retailer will host a ribbon-cutting ceremony at 8:45 a.m., Thursday for the Parkville location, at 1925 E. Joppa Road. Grand opening festivities will continue through Saturday and include opportunities for patrons to win a $100 Savers gift certificate.

Locally, the Parkville store will partner with Multiple Sclerosis Association of America. The nonprofit will receive a portion of funds from all customer donated items, whether the products make it to the sales floor or not.

"Working with nonprofits is something that sets Savers apart," Beshah said.

The Parkville store will be open Monday through Saturday from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Thus far, Beshah said about 50 locals were hired to work at the store but additional opportunities are available through the Savers website.

The last tenant at the Joppa Heights location was Giant Food, which vacated the shopping center in March 2007. Savers leased the property in June 2012.
