Vietnamese Restaurant Opens In Carney Village

Pho Thanh Cong, which offers Vietnamese cuisine, has been open since Oct. 18.

After a morning spent taking photos of flooding near the Gunpowder and Minebank Run, I was pleasantly surprised to find just what I needed in Carney Village Shopping Center: a hot bowl of soup.

Not just any soup, though—the savory Vietnamese noodle soup known as pho. A new restaurant, Pho Thanh Cong opened in the shopping center next to Mars grocery store earlier this month.

The shop, owned by the Pham family—nine siblings and their various extended family—opened it's doors on Oct. 18. It's name: thanh cong, which means "sucess", is rather apt.

As I ate lunch—an order of spring rolls packed with noodles, lettuce, shrimp and pork with peanut sauce and a bowl of pho with beef, sprouts and herbs—I was able to catch up with Carney couple Kirk and Lennie Priddy also checking the new spot for the first time.

Lennie, for her part, said she was glad to have a pho option so close at hand. Typically, she said, she'd been travelling to Towson for the rich, savory broth and noodles.

"It’s close enough to where I live, I always go to the one in Towson. But it’s far from here so when we found out about this… It’s good," Priddy said.

Khoi Pham, whose family lives all over Baltimore County, said that Carney was an easy choice.

"We did the research and we found this place—it's good for business," he said.

Have you tried out Pho Thanh Cong? Do you think you will in the future? Tell us in the comments.

Where is Carney Village?
Nick Gestido (Editor) October 30, 2012 at 09:12 pm
ltnelson: Carney Village Shopping Center is located at the corner of Harford Road and Joppa Road. It's commonly referred to as the "Mars Shopping Center" since there's a Mars grocery store there.

Went there the day after they opened - EXCELLENT Pho! A bit spicier than some of the other places, which I really appreciated!

Jason — couldn't tell you about how spicy it is on its own. I'm a slave to sriracha, so that went directly into my soup making it spicy and awesome.

I think that's wonderful that they have opened. I wish them success.

Thanks, Nick! I am from Littleton, CO and new to the area. So if Patch could give out addresses with the dining places, I could use my GPS.

ltnelson: Welcome to Parkville-Overlea! Sorry about the confusion on the addresses, I will try to be more sensitive to transplants in the future. Enjoy your pho! (It's really good).

Yeah, I'd say the one I experienced was a "1/2 TSP of Sriracha" spicier than Pho Dat Thanh's on it's own. I too added a crap ton more. That and Hoisin - I love my sweet and spicy!!

I have eaten Pho and Summer rolls all over town. This place is my favorite; they make the best of both. The service is efficient and friendly, and the modest/ casual ambiance is clean and well maintained. Bruce W

Apparently my last comment was flagged. I'll clean it up: Surprise, Surprise, the offer is onlyRead More good for NEW customers. Yet I've been a "loyal" Comcast customer for over 15 years now, never late on a payment nor complained when my service failed or I've had an issue that wasn't resolved without me taking "above and beyond" steps. Comcast is a juggernaut that just doesn't care if once it gets your business. You get locked in and then are stuck until your "contract" expires. Mine expires 2/22/2014 or I could cancel and pay $200. I'm going to hold out and then cut cable all together and just have Internet service so my Rokus work. But Verizon FIOS is looking better by the day.
