Right Here and Right Now!

Instant gratification is making us poorer than we need to be. Take up my challenge to discover your needs versus your wants.

In our society, we are driven to want and consume things.  Not only do we have the age-old "Jones'" to keep up with, now we are driven by ever-evolving technology.  Technology has increased the speed of life, and with it, our desires to have "IT" (whatever IT may be) right here and right now.

Instant gratification is the norm in society today.  That may be a good thing in some ways - for example solving a problem immediately through an online chat.  When it comes to managing your money, however, that mindset of instant gratification can easily be your downfall.

Your first step in saving and eventually accumulating wealth has got to be living within your means right now.   You need to clearly distinguish between those things you need, and those things you want.  If you're buying a new pair of shoes, is it because you have holes in your last pair?  Or just because you're a fashionista and want another pair of shoes because they would be so perfect with a particular outfit?

My challenge to you this week is to make a conscious effort to categorize every purchase you make as a need or a want.  If you just want it, put it back and put that money in a savings account (or pay down your already too high credit card bills)!  If you can't put it back, at least be conscious of why.  It's time we stopped worshipping at the altar of instant gratification and learn to save for what we want.

I welcome your comments and "Likes"!  If you take up the challenge I've set down, please give me some feedback on how it worked for you.
