Bikers Place Flags On Path Of Honor For 9/11

During the early morning hours Friday, a group of dedicated motorcycle enthusiasts placed American flags along Putty Hill Avenue in honor of the victims of the 9/11 attacks.

The 2,977 flags—one for each person who lost their life during the attacks—were placed by members of the Iron Shields, a law enforcement motorcycle club, and the Baltimore City Firefighters Riders Group to create a "Path of Honor" for their Patriot Day Ride which takes place on Saturday.

Ride organizer Chuck Ritz, a Parkville resident, wrote in a Facebook message that the display is set up "to remember all of those lost on 9/11 and to honor all who have since gone to war."

"We , everybody was on board for that—the hype is over now but to me the 11th anniversary is just as important as the 10th and every one before and after that. We wanted to remember the victims, and there's still a war going on so we're also honoring those who made the ultimate sacrifice and are protecting our freedom in Afghanistan."

The ride, which begins in Darlington at Chesapeake Harley Davidson and ends at McAvoy's, will raise money for the Flight 93 Memorial and the Metro Burn Fund.

Ritz said that he expects anywhere between 300 and 500 motorcycles to cruise down Putty Hill Avenue in the early afternoon Saturday.
