School's In. . . In Case You Haven't Noticed!

School is in session!  We have almost two weeks in, and I have learned so much already!  7:45 is early for some people.  Food is a salvo for almost every teenage angst.  Flowers brighten up a day.  A compliment can make your day turn around.  Anne Frank was right when she said shortly before she was captured, "Despite everything, I believe that people are really good at heart."

My husband and I get up every morning at 4:45 a.m. We share one bathroom with our son;we all get out of the house together at 6:15 a.m., and it's a true challenge getting all of us awake, ready, and out of the house in just an hour and a half.  Did you know that some kids who come to high school in Parkville come all the way across town, and have to get on their buses at 5:15 a.m.?

I pack my lunch, my husband packs his lunch, and our son buys lunch nearby his work.  Lunches cost $3.00 at school, less if you are a recipient of the federally sponsored Free and Reduced Lunch Program.  Did you know? Completion of the F&RL forms by even those who do not qualify, helps the school qualify for other grants and assistance?  So, even if  you KNOW you don't qualify for F&RL, your submission of the form helps your school.  Elementary, Middle, and High School.  Doesn't matter.  Here is a website for the National Food Program that administers the Free and Reduced Lunch Program. http://www.fns.usda.gov/cnd/Application/application_process.htm

Students at Parkville High School are SO involved.  Football, track, music, community service, they are involved!  Our football home opener is scheduled for FRIDAY, September 6 at 4:00 p.m. at Parkville High's Yates Field against John Carroll High School.  (look for the entire schedule and more at www.parkvilleathletics.org).  These guys have a lot of heart, and knowing many of them personally, I can tell you, they appreciate it when people come out from their community and cheer them on!  Our first home Cross Country Meet isn't until October, but nonetheless, kids are working out daily after school and going to away meets beginning this week, also!
Auditions for the Parkville High School Fall/Winter Play will take place within the next few weeks, so look to see a supremely talented crew putting on an awesome play in the next few months as well.

Several Parkville kids are planning their next Operation Welcome Home Maryland trip to BWI to support our troops returning from overseas deployment (check them out at http://www.operationwelcomehomemd.org/).  It is a very emotional night for all involved, lots of fun is had getting together, and everyone is touched by the reunions between family members and sometimes pets and their returning People!  Others are looking to get involved at University of Maryland Health Systems Pediatric Ward, reading to children.  No matter where you look, we have some AWESOME students, and I hope to  be able to introduce you to several of them jointly and individually, over the course of this school year!
