What's Going On At Parkville High School

What's going on at Parkville High School, you ask?  Well, it's a good time to ask that, because everywhere I turn something is happening.  Whether it is Winter Play Practice, Spring Musical Rehearsal, Relay For Life Meetings, Basketball games, Wrestling tournaments, the switch from audio to video morning announcements, the leap into the digital world with proposed signage in the 'front yard' or just plain old getting ready to graduate another class of seniors.

The Winter Play is called "She Kills Monsters", and it promises to be interesting, at times exploring lifestyles of the living . . . and the dead.  Mr. Steve Devorah and Ms. Lisa Moose, are working overtime to ensure that students know their lines, that costumes are prepared, and that the show goes on over Valentine's Day Weekend. The play will be on stage on Wednesday, February 12, Thursday, February 13, and Saturday, February 15.  Check the Patch calendar for times of the shows!

While the play is on its way to the stage, Ms. Sharon Harris is rehearsing with singers, dancers and actors to put together "A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum", to be seen by the public in April of this year.  The parts have been cast, and the scenes have been read through. . . everyone is having a good time preparing this production for the stage.

Meanwhile, Parkville High School is attempting to replace its display sign in the 'front yard' with an LED sign. Mr. Ames, the Parkville HS principal, is asking for community input as to the sign. He writes as follows:  "We'd like to see if they approve of the above proposed digital sign for Parkville High School. The sign will be an LED console placed in the existing brick structure. The sign is monochrome (red digital letters only) and does not flash. We are able to update the sign more frequently and to place more announcements since it works with “slides” that change rather than the restriction to one message that our current sign allows for. The funds for the project were donated by The Parkville High School Alumni Association, The Founder’s Club, and other organizations within Parkville High.

If you have any questions or concerns about the proposed sign please email me,  Matt Ames, at mames@bcps.org"  Mr. Ames welcomes feedback from the community as to how they perceive the sign proposed to go out in front of the school.

Speaking of the Parkville community, CCBC is going to be at Parkville High School this week, talking to students about getting college credit while still in high school, talking to their parents about getting college credits while working, and possibly touching on how getting a community college start is a much cheaper way to get those first two years of higher learning completed!  There will be representatives at Parkville High School, in the B Cafeteria on Thursday evening, January 30 from 6:00 p.m., giving a presentation, and ready to answer your questions.  Please come, your presence is encouraged and welcome!

At Parkville, we are finding more and more often, that our students are really motivated to give back.  To that end, the students have been working on an American Cancer Society-sponsored fundraiser called Relay For Life since August.  It is their goal to raise $20,000 by fundraising, soliciting sponsorships, and creating teams of students, teachers, parents and mentors to come and Celebrate, Fight Back, and Remember at the 2nd Annual PHS Relay For Life.  We encourage the Parkville Community to get involved, either by coming to our event on March 15, 2014 in the gym, or by supporting one of our many fundraising events.  Please check back here for updates on events leading up to the big show, and check in the Parkville Patch's calendar of events just in case we have something you'd like to help with! Otherwise, you can visit the Relay For Life online, and make a donation, purchase a luminaria bag in memory of or in honor of a loved one who has suffered with cancer, or just see what we're up to.  I think you'll be proud to the in the same community with these students!  That website address is www.relayforlife.org/parkvillehsmd/ if you are interested in investigating!
