Parkville Rec Council Awards 2013 Scholarships

Parkville Rec Council awarded 26 scholarships Tuesday night.

When they head off to college this summer, a large group of local graduates will be getting some help from back home. 

Parkville Rec Council awarded 26 members of the class of 2013 scholarships in a ceremony held Tuesday night at the Parkville Rec Center.

Recipients of the scholarships are going to schools far and wide; among them Indiana University of Pennsylvania, York College of Pennsylvania, George Washington University, Morgan State University, and University of Maryland College Park. 

Kids who earned scholarships all played sports with Parkville Rec in programs like basketball, soccer, softball and dance; in college they'll be studying to be teachers, aerospace engineers, chemists and physicists. 

The 2013 scholarship winners are: 

  • Brooks Anderson, of Carney, who will attend Virginia Tech.
  • John Voelker, of Loch Raven, who wil attend University of Maryland College Park.
  • Amanda Becker, of Parkville, who will attend Towson University
  • Hannah Dresel, of Carney, who wil attend Indiana University of Pennsylvania
  • Ryan Fonheisser, of Carney, who will attend Towson University
  • Abigail Freas, of Parkville, who will attend the University of Vermont
  • Monique Wynder, of Carney, who will attend Morgan State University
  • Laura Thacker, of Carney, who will attend Salisbury University
  • Andrew Giska, of Parkville, who will attend Temple University
  • Mikayla Heckler, of Carney, who will attend Towson University
  • Meredith House, of Carney, who will attend the University of Maryland College Park
  • Taylor Heath, of Parkville, who will attend George Washington University
  • Brenna Okeson, of Parkville, who will attend the University of Delaware
  • Lindsay Meyers, of Parkville, who will attend Salisbury University
  • Matthew Price , of Parkville, who will attend West Virginia University
  • Robert Walsh, of Parkville, who will attend Towson University
  • Jennifer Hahn, of Carney, who will attend York College of Pennsylvania
  • James King, of Parkville, who will attend University of Maryland College Park
  • Owen Ward, of Parkville, who will attend University of Maryland College Park
  • Shkira Rollins, of Parkville, who will attend Stevenson University
  • Erin Nolder, of Parkville, who will attend Princeton University
  • Ryan Wolford, of Carney, who will attend University of Maryland College Park
  • Rebecca Benedetta, of Loch Raven, who will attend CCBC-Essex
  • Brianna Hicks, of Loch Raven, who will attend Towson University
  • Lacey Goff, of Parkville, who will attend York College of Pennsylvania
  • Nicholas Demski, of Carney, who will attend Towson University
Parkville Rec community supervisor Jerry Hahn congratulated the graduates on their accomplishments and expressed a hope for their future.

"I'd like to congratulate all of you and I hope also that you get involved in a rec program here in Parkville or wherever life takes you," Hahn said. "It's important to have someone to mentor you and teach you life lessons"

"If you ever want to come back, you're welcome," Hahn told the grads.
