The holidays can be happy, but they can also be stressful and depressing for some adults as well as children.

The holidays can be happy, but they can also be stressful and depressing for some adults as well as children.

According to an article on Exercise and Depression from WebMD, there are many studies which indicate that people who exercise regularly have lower rates of depression and decreased stress. Exercise is an effective yet underused treatment. When you exercise, your body releases chemicals called endorphins. These endorphins reduce the perception of pain and trigger positive feelings in the body like the powerful drug morphine without leading to addiction.

Benefits of Exercise

  • Improve sleep
  • Boost self-esteem
  • Increase energy level
  • Lower Blood Pressure
  • Strengthen and build bones
  • Improve muscle tone and strength

Social support in reducing stress and depression is very important. Joining a group exercise class or exercising with a friend or partner could be beneficial. Biking, gardening, housework (sweeping, mopping, or vacuuming), yard work (mowing or raking), dancing, biking, and walking are moderate exercises and a great place to start helping you or someone you know to produce those endorphins and have a HAPPY, HEALTHY Holiday Season and a Happier Life!!!
