Grab and Go Kids Planner

Outdoor exploration, dreamy music and a farmers market offer learning fun for your family this week.

Halfway through the summer now, I bet you're getting creative with things to do with your kiddos. Below you'll find a few fresh ideas to keep them away from TV and video games ... for at least half a day.

Youth Archery at Baltimore County Fish and Game

The Baltimore County Game & Fish Protective Association, at 3400 Northwind Road, will host its monthly Youth Archery Day. Come on down Thursday at 9:30 a.m. to join in the fun. The center will supply all the necessary supplies and training.

Farmers Market Friday

Shop for fresh, locally grown produce on The Avenue every Friday from 10 a.m.-1 p.m. Great prices, friendly faces and good shopping all make this a great Friday shopping and lunch venture. Take the kids— they can learn a thing or two about fruits and vegetables and eating locally.

Marshy Point Movie

Join the naturalists at Marshy Point on Friday night at 7 p.m. for an open-air evening showing of Gnomeo and Juliet. The movie is free, and snacks are available.

Exploring Hemlock Gorge

Spend this Saturday morning in the shady woods of the Gunpowder Falls’ Hemlock Gorge in northern Baltimore County. Find wildflowers, ferns, birds and other wildlife while walking along the river under the hemlock trees. Ask for directions when registering to meet at the site. Geocaching at

A treasure hunting game using a GPS for hide and seek, geocaching in the woods is a lot of fun for older (8+) children and adults alike. From 10:30 a.m. to noon on Saturday, you can bring your own GPS or use the ones supplied. Dress for the weather, including sturdy boots. Sunday Wake Up and Dream! 

The inspiring Julie Kurzava and Sidney Yin delve into dreams, expectations, aspirations and possibilities in a musical program devoted to standards from the American Songbook. Works by Carmichael, Porter, Mercer, Gershwin, Gus Kahn and others will be performed at Germano's Trattoria in Little Italy, from 7:30- 9:15 p.m. on Sunday night. Tickets are required. Story time at Barnes and Noble

Bring your preschooler on Monday for story time at a favorite bookstore on The Avenue at 10:30 a.m. Stay for lunch at one of the many kids-friendly places nearby.
