Carney Man, Franklin High Teacher Indicted On Assault Charges

A Baltimore County Public School teacher and Carney resident was indicted by a grand jury on assault charges on Monday.

on July 16 for allegedly pointing a handgun at three workers removing trees on a property adjacent to his home in the 9900 block of Finney Drive in Carney.

The workers were preparing a property at 9900 Harford Road for construction, according to a police report.

At the time, police charged Joseph with three counts of first-degree assault, felony use of a firearm and a handgun violation.

The grand jury indicted Joseph on the three assault charges which, combined, carry a maximum sentence of 75 years in jail if Joseph were to be convicted in circuit court.

Joseph has yet to be arraigned and a trial date has not been set, Baltimore County State's Attorney Scott Shellenberger said.

"An indictment means that the grand jury had probable cause to believe a crime was committed and that this person committed the crime," Shellenberger said.

Charles Herndon, a spokesman for Baltimore County Public Schools, confirmed that Joseph is a teacher at where he began teaching in 2011. Prior to that, he taught at the in Towson since 2000.

Although Herndon would not comment specifically on Joseph's case, he said that generally when a county schools employee is arrested the school system is notified.

In cases where the alleged crime would be a barrier to employment, the employee is generally placed on administrative leave.

Herndon said that he believes first-degree assault is considered a barrier crime by the schools system.
