UPDATE: Joppa Road Reopened After Early Morning Crash Downed Wires

Joppa Road closed in both directions between Old Harford and Satyr Hill roads as a result of a car accident early Tuesday morning.

UPDATE (3:38 p.m.)—Just in time for the afternoon commute, Joppa Road has reopened in both directions near the scene of a crash that downed wires in the road early this morning.

Shortly after 4 a.m. Tuesday, the driver of a 2008 Kia Sedona lost control of his vehicle while turning near the intersection of Joppa Road and Emla Avenue, police said.

The car jumped the curb and hit a fire hydrant, a BGE pole and came to rest against a sign for Rita's Italian Ice. As a result of the single-car crash, electric wires and the BGE pole were downed across Joppa Road.

"It was quite a mess with the fire hydrant, the pole and the wires," said Louise Rogers-Feher, a spokeswoman for the Baltimore County Police Department.

The driver, a 62 year old Parkville man was taken to Sinai Hospital to be treated for minor injuries.

An early morning car crash left downed wires and a pole in the middle of Joppa Road between Old Harford and Satyr Hill Roads at around 4 a.m., police said.

As of 11:33 a.m. Joppa Road remained closed in both directions, according to Detective Cathy Batton, a spokeswoman for the Baltimore County Police department.

Police said that the wires are in the road in the area of Old Harford and Joppa Roads and that BGE is currently working to resolve the problem. Multiple burglar alarms were set off when the power went out after the power lines fell, but police said that no burglaries occurred.

The number of homes and businesses without power remains in question, as does the time it might take to repair the outage.
