Fullerton TMobile Store Shuttered After Car Goes Through Building

The shop was deemed unsafe by engineers and closed after an accident on Saturday.

A Fullerton cell phone shop was badly damaged on Saturday when a van drove through the side of the building.

The shop, which has been deemed unsafe by the county, is closed until the building can be repaired.

Police said that the incident occurred around 1:30 p.m. on Saturday when a man driving a 1992 Chevrolet Conversion van pulled into a parking space alongside the building at 8010 Belair Road.

The man accelerated and collided with a brick wall, then continued to accelerate until he came to rest fully inside the building, according to police spokeswoman Louise Rogers-Feher.

The driver of the van, 53-year-old Steven James Overman of the 5100 block of Walther Avenue, was transported to Johns Hopkins Bayview hospital with serious injuries.

The police crash team continues to investigate the incident. No one inside the TMobile store at the time of the crash was injured.

Court records show that a number of traffic violations were filed against Overman in connection with the incident including: driving on a suspended license, negligent driving, driving while under the influence of alcohol, driving while impaired by alcohol, and driving while impaired by drugs and/or drugs and alcohol.

Overman was also charged for driving or attempting to drive under the influence of alcohol back in April, according to court records.
