Oak Crest Resident Robbed By Phone Scammer

Pass the cautionary tale along to senior family members.

By Patch Local Editor Nick DiMarco

An 89 year old man was duped into transferring money to a phone scammer after he was told that his son needed to post bail, according to Baltimore County police.

The victim, living in the Oak Crest Village, received a phone call at about 10 a.m. on July 3 from a man claiming to be a lawyer for his son, according to Ofc. Mark Dorsey. The man on the phone told the senior citizen that his son needed $1,900 for bail.

The scammer told the older man to wire the cash via money-gram to an account in Port-au-Prince, Haiti. The victim sent the money and is currently out $1,900.

Dorsey said that all senior citizens need to verify information with family members before wiring money.
