Police Release Identities in Sarah Lane Murder-Suicide

A woman and her grandson are dead in an apparent murder-suicide, police said.

Baltimore County police are investigating what they are now calling a murder-suicide involving two family members in Cub Hill.

Evelyn Delene Hofferberth, 66, and her grandson, Brett Michael Hofferberth, 21, are dead after Hofferberth allegedly killed his grandmother and then himself, police said in a press release.

Officers responded to the 2700 block of Sarah Lane in Cub Hill around 4:40 p.m. Nov. 2 for a report of a cardiac arrest, police said.

Evelyn Hofferberth's daughter had received a phone call from her mother's boss when she did not show up for work for two days. The daughter then called her brother who visited the home on Sarah Lane and found Evelyn Hofferberth on the basement floor with a large amount of blood by her head, according to police.

Shortly before police received the call for a cardiac arrest, an anonymous caller reported that a woman had been killed by her grandson at the Sarah Lane residence and that the grandson had taken her car, police said in a press release.

Police later located Evelyn Hofferberth's car on Loch Raven Drive. Brett Michael Hofferberth was inside the vehicle, dead from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound, according to police.

An autopsy will be performed today to determine the cause of death for both family members, according to a press release sent out by police.
