Del. Boteler: Lotto Should Benefit Veterans

The Baltimore County delegate is proposing legislation to require the state lottery to earmark a portion of proceeds to benefit of the Veteran's Trust Fund.

Editor's Note: Republican of Legislative District 8, which includes parts of Parkville, Carney and Perry Hall, submitted the following statement as a letter to the editor.

America would not be what it is today without the commitment and dedication of our military professionals. It is our duty to serve those that have served our county, and the state of Maryland is fully devoted to this goal.

This is why I am proposing legislation to conduct an annual lottery to benefit the Maryland Veterans Trust Fund. The act would require The State Lottery Agency to deposit a certain percentage of the proceeds into the Veterans Trust Fund to support and aid our veterans. The money would go towards education assistance, housing, and job resources. Money in the fund may also be used to make grants and loans to veterans and their families, and support public and private programs that serve veterans in the State.

I have always adamantly supported legislation that benefits the veterans of Maryland and will continue to serve devotedly on the Maryland Veterans Caucus as co-chair.

The caucus serves as a support staff to ensure that legislation is produced that benefits veterans. It also works towards bringing veterans down to Annapolis to testify on veteran’s bills so that their voices are heard. Forward thinking on legislation is the key to keeping the lives of our veterans as comfortable and simple as possible. The caucus meets on a weekly basis to ensure that progress is continually being made to support our veterans.

I hope that you will continue to support our veterans with me as we work towards serving them with the same dedication that they have shown us.
