Left Turns Banned Onto Harford Road From Development

The Carney Improvement Association only wants right hand turns allowed from Placid Avenue onto Harford Road.

Residents leaving the Bender-Vogel development in Carney will only be allowed to make right hand turns from Placid Avenue onto Harford Road.

The State Highway Administration has made the decision to limit turns from the west extension of Placid Avenue from the development, according to an email to a community leader from Councilman David Marks.

"Maryland State Highway Administration District Engineer David Peake has informed our office that the state will only allow right turns, at all times, from the development at the Bender-Vogel property in Carney," Marks' email reads.

Members of the Carney Improvement Association have been urging elected officials, and the State Highway Administration, to post signs at both sides of Placid Avenue’s intersection with Harford Road explicitly making it clear that only right hand turns are allowed.

In an email to association members, Meg O’Hare, the group’s president, said she hopes the state will also decide to place signs specifying right hand turns only from the east side of the intersection.

"We hope that the existing east leg of Placid Avenue will also be restricted to right turn only intead [sic] of left turn only because it would be very dangerous for drivers to cross Harford Road from west to east during the evening rush hours," O’Hare writes.

The State Highway Administration was set to discuss the intersection during an internal meeting on Monday, but that was delayed because of the inclement weather, said Charlie Gischlar, a spokesman for the agency.
