Sarbanes Turns to Small Donors

Rep. John Sarbanes hopes to receive 1,000 donations of less than $100.

Rep. John Sarbanes, who represents much of the Parkville-Overlea area, is running an interesting experiment during this year’s election.

Sarbanes is trying to see if primarily small donors can finance his campaign as part of his Grassroots Donors project, where he has raised $500,000 from traditional donations of more than $100, but can’t access it until he receives at least 1,000 donations between $5 and $100, according to Salon.

But Sarbanes isn't taking a huge risk with his reelection chances.

Sarbanes, son of former U.S. Sen. Paul Sarbanes, is facing Republican Eric Knowles (who is also the Constitution Party's candidate for governor) in a heavily Democratic district. In 2010, Sarbanes received 61 percent of the vote.

According to federal campaign finance reports, Sarbanes has reported $964,593 on hand compared to Knowles $361. Sarbanes' report also shows that 97 percent of the money he has raised comes from individual donors with a single $1,000 political action committee donation coming from the International Brotherhood of Painters and Allied Trades.

Where does he stand on the govenor tax raise ? His area has Many families making over $150,000. a year .If he supports O'Malley then we should just throw him out by the grassroots ! I don't care if he is your friend if he supports this tax he isn't looking after your children and grandchildren and should go .

John Sarbanes is an honorable man. I am sure he will win his district again. What I don't get is all you people hate taxes but you are in the minority why don't you guys get them out the right way? Vote them out. I am tired of all the bitching about 1/4 of one percent tax rise on people who can easily can afford it. If you have kids going to school you shouldn't mind. You have neighbors on the police force, Fire fighyers they mean someting too.

So were punished if we are the least bit successful? The president did a song and dance and raised our debt to put $17.00 in our bi-weekly paychecks then O'Malley takes it away? This increase will put families in the position to Pull kids out of private schools especially in his district many have two or three and are struggling and guess what before you hit that comment that it is our choice think and don't be stupid.Baltimore County schools are over crowded now the answer will be RAISE taxes then it will hit couples making about $80,000 in piggyback taxes .If he votes the raise Throw him out.We can get honorable men who have had to work for a living .
