Shop Green Weekend Means No Sales Tax

The Maryland Comptroller's Office announced that this weekend certain purchases that can help make a home more energy efficient are tax free.

Need a new A/C to before the summer heat begins? Did your old refrigerator stop running? As long as you buy Energy Star certified products, this weekend may be the perfect time to do something about it.

The Maryland State Comptrollers Office announced that for certain energy-efficient upgrades, Feb. 19-21 is a a tax-free Shop Maryland Energy "Shop Green" weekend.

During Shop Maryland Energy weekend, the following Energy Star products are not subject to the 6 percent state sales tax.

  • Air conditioners
  • Clothes washers and dryers
  • Furnaces
  • Heat pumps
  • Boilers
  • Solar water heaters (tax-exempt at all times now)
  • Standard size refrigerators
  • Dehumidifiers
  • Programmable thermostats
  • Compact fluorescent light bulbs

Not included in the weekend-long promotions are wine or dorm-sized refrigerators, microwaves, stoves, doors, windows or other building materials.

According to the State Comptroller's website, this event will occur every year from the Saturday before the third Monday in February until the third Monday in February.

Additionally, the website announces an annual tax-free week on clothing and footwear priced under $100 during the second week of August.
