2 Area Students Named National Merit Scholarhip Semifinalists

Students at Loch Raven join a pool of 16,000 entrants nationwide.

Two students from Loch Raven high school were named semifinalists for the National Merit Scholarship, school officials announced Wednesday.

Olivia A. Cypull and Emily K. Ruppel will join a national pool of 16,000 semifinalists, just one percent of all the students who take the test.

Students were selected based on Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test scores.

Most semifinalists, depending on their academic record and recommendations, will compete as finalists for 8,300 college scholarships worth more than $34 million in all.
