Maryland's Underage College Students More Likely to Drink Booze

A new study says the difference between Maryland and other states on underage college drinking is significant.

Underage college students in Maryland are significantly more likely to drink alcohol than the same population in the rest of the United States, a study shows.

The Maryland Collaborative to Reduce College Drinking and Related Problems, led by the University System of Maryland and Johns Hopkins University, found that 83 percent of underage students in Maryland used alcohol in the past year, compared with 75 percent in other parts of the country.

The difference did not hold true among students of legal drinking age, according to the study, the results of which were released late last week.

The study also found no difference in binge drinking in Maryland compared to other schools.
