Overlea High Tops County Schools A/C Priority List

The school, opened in 1961, was ranked as needing an air conditioning system the most according to a list posted by the Baltimore County School system.

Air conditioning in our public schools is something of a hot-button issue around Baltimore County at the moment, and a priority list recently released by the school system shows the greatest need is at one area high school.

Overlea High School topped the list released by the school system late last week.

At the time, school system spokesman Charles Herndon told Patch's Nayana Davis that a full explanation of the priority list would be provided at a Sept. 18 meeting of the Board of Education.

That meeting was cancelled due to inclement weather and is scheduled to take place tonight.

Here's where area schools rank on the county's air conditioning priority list of 47 schools:

  • #1 Overlea High School
  • #13 Villa Cresta Elementary School
  • #19 Oakleigh Elementary School
  • #32 Halstead Academy Elementary School
  • #36 Carney Elementary School
  • #43 Parkville Middle School

The air conditioning priority list covers only those schools where there is not currently a project underway to provide air conditioning. Air conditioning was installed at Harford Hills Elementary School over the summer of the 2011-2012 school year.

They should start with the school that have more than 1 floor. If you are on the 2nd or 3rd floor of a school, it is pretty bad.

Overlea High has 2 floors. What makes it get so hot on sunny afternoons is the fact that it has so many windows. Only a small window pane on the bottom can be opened. My Chemistry class was held in a classroom facing the sun in the afternoon. Since all the students were working over Bunsen burners, all of the windows and hallway doors were closed. The overwhelming heat got to me and I fainted!
