Parkville High Senior Awarded Dell Scholarship

Zahara Kazmi is one of only 303 students in the country to receive the award.

When graduating Parkville High School senior Zahara Kazmi heads off to college this fall, she won't be alone.

Kazmi was recently awarded one of only 303 scholarships given by the Michael and Susan Dell Foundation to seniors in 2013, according to a news release from Baltimore County Public Schools.

The award includes a $20,000 scholarship that Kazmi will use to attend Loyola University Maryland, where she plans to study business and computer science, according to Baltimore County spokeswoman Ellen Kobler.

In addition, as a Dell Scholar, Kazmi will have access to mentoring, computer technology, a summer orientation, an online community for mentoring, peer interaction and other support.

To be eligible for the award, Kazmi successfully completed the Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) program.

"This year, 98.8 percent of the school system’s 428 AVID graduating seniors were accepted into four-year colleges, and they have reported earning (to date) $15.4 million in scholarship awards," according to a news release.
