The honors keep rolling in for Pine Grove Middle School art teacher Vernon Fains.

Fains, who is the reigning Maryland Middle School Art Teacher of the Year, has been named a Maryland 2014 Service Learning Fellow.

Awarded by the Maryland State Department of Education, the honor recognizes educators who "engage younger generations in meaningful and substantive community service," according to a statement from Dorienne Plait, a Pine Grove Middle English teacher and the school's Good News Ambassador.

Fains is one of six educators to receive the honor this year, and the only one from Baltimore County, according to Plait.

Since the inception of the award 20 years ago, 230 educators have been honored for their service learning work with students.

"Pine Grove Middle School is proud to have Mr. Fains as an esteemed member os its school community," Plait wrote in the statement. "PGMS staff and students commend him for his unending commitment to inspire and motivate all students to both contribute and learn from their community."
