Schools to Close Two Hours Early for Third Time This Week

This is the fifth time in the last two weeks that schools have closed early as a result of scorching heat.

Baltimore County Public Schools are closing two hours early for the third time this week on Friday, June 10, according a release sent out late on June 9.

Afternoon kindergarten and after-school activities have been canceled.

Temperatures reached 101 degrees Thursday afternoon, with heat index values maxing out around 106 degrees. Although classes are still letting out early, Friday will seem cool by comparison with a high of around just 91 degrees, according to predictions by the National Weather Service.

The National Weather service has Baltimore County under a severe thunderstorm watch until 8 p.m. tonight, with a possibility of rain on Friday as well.

A "code orange" air quality alert has also been issued for Friday, meaning that air pollution quantities could become unsafe for sensitive groups like the sick, elderly or young children.

Temperatures are expected to cool down to highs in the low 80s for much of next week.
