Baltimore County Public Library’s Woodlawn Branch kicked off the Summer Reading Club with “Sneaks Day” on Wednesday.

The public library mascot, Sneaks the Cat, greeted second-graders from Edmonson Heights Elementary School and hung out with them during the club’s kickoff.

The theme of this year’s reading club is “Fizz, Boom, Read!” To demonstrate the explosive title, Baltimore County Executive Kevin Kamenetz mixed baking soda with vinegar during the kick-off. Baltimore County Public School superintendent Dr. Dallas Dance and Baltimore County Public Library director Jim Fish watched the experiment while wearing white lab coats.

The reading club officially begins on June 16 and is open to anyone, including children who cannot read -- they will be read to -- and teens. The main goal? Encourage kids to read!

Participants are encouraged to follow a school reading list, read summer reading assignments, or any book they’d like.

Registration is still open online and by visiting a local library branch.
