Football: Overlea Advances to Region Finals

The Falcons cruise to an easy 52-16 win over Reginald Lewis on Friday.

After an incredible regular season that left the Falcons with a 10-0 record, Overlea won its first playoff game in years Friday night, taking down Reginald Lewis, 52-16, in a Class 1A North semifinal game.

Overlea will next face New Town in the regional final, tenatively set for Friday at CCBC Essex. The two teams met earlier in the season in Week 2, where Overlea pulled out a 24-18 overtime win.

"We're going to have to protect the ball better there, they have a different kind of tempo," Overlea coach Craig Rollins said.

With 2:08 left in the first quarter against Reginald Lewis, quarterback Tevin Berry put Overlea in the board after he connected with Alex Wells on what would be the first of Wells' many touchdowns.

De'Quan Pettway and Wells then each scored touchdowns to extend the lead to 22-0 at the end of the first quarter. Late in the second quarter, Berry was picked off by Reginald Lewis, which returned it for a touchdown.

But, Wells responded by taking the ensuing kickoff in for a touchdown to extend the lead to 28-8 at halftime. Wells later picked off a Reginald Lewis pass late in the third quarter and ran it back nearly 90 yards for another touchdown.

"We stayed calm, kept our poise — we were able to keep going and execute and perform," Rollins said. "New Town is gonna be tough."

Before the boys left the field they knelt in prayer, and listened to a few words from coach Rollins.

"Stay healthy, keep your bodies up — this is the playoffs, we should be thinking about this one game at a time; we've got New Town next week, so the only thing on your mind should be beating New Town," Rollins said.
