Parkville Y Takes First In Worldwide Fitness Contest

Team members biked 20,036 miles and burned 880,668 calories during December.

Parkville's Family Center Y won big in December, placing first in a worldwide fitness competition hosted by the manufacturer of an interactive exercise bike.

Members of the gym biked over 20,000 miles and burned more than 880,000 calories during December to place first out of 1,048 competitors in a contest hosted by Expresso bike manufacturer Interactive Fitness.

On the company's news blog, Parkville Y Fitness Director Andy Corbett wrote in to tell the story of the team's victory.

In his letter, Corbett credits Y member Serge Arbona for helping his team to victory.

"I thought of for the team was Serge Arbona. Serge is a member of our center and a national champion ultra marathon runner," Corbett wrote. "He is just an amazing athlete. I knew if I could convince Serge to ride we would have a great chance. Serge was up for the challenge and said he would be glad to ride. Some 1,886 miles later, he was the top rider worldwide."

Winning the competition was not without adversity though—a YMCA in Bear/Glasgow, DE gave Parkville a run for their money, Corbett wrote. The Delaware-based Y was open for 32 more hours than Parkville's during December.

But through hard work and perserverance they pulled through, winning the contest and landing 3 of their riders in the top 10, and another 7 in the top 100  worldwide for December.
