The Good Old Days

Remembering the good old days!

In June 1975 Steven Spielberg scared the bathing suits off us and the tradition of 'summer blockbuster' movies began, which had me had me thinking — when was the first time I saw Jaws?

I was 9 in ‘75 and I know it had to be YEARS later.

Remember the old days? If you didn’t see a movie in the theater, you had to wait a LONG time to see what everyone was talking about. It wasn’t like nowadays when you wait a few weeks or months and it's out on DVD so you can check it out at home.

In the old days you'd have to wait for an edited version on TV — with commercials, hardly the best way to view a movie like Jaws!

My brother’s kids recently asked him what his favorite tapes or DVDs were when he was a kid and they looked on with bewilderment when he said we didn’t have tapes or DVDs "waaaaaaay back then". It was hard for them to wrap their minds around that and of course it would be, that's how they grew up.

My husband told them about the excitement he would experience when the new season of Saturday morning cartoons would begin — explaining that we didn’t have several cartoon channels to choose from. If we wanted to see cartoons, it would be Saturday mornings, in our PJs, with a bowl of cereal.

Just as surprising to them was that at Christmastime, when families finally found out when A Charlie Brown Christmas, Rudolph, The Grinch, or Frosty the Snowman would be on it was a big, fun event because it would be the only time that year the we would all see it.

No taping it, no VHS, No DVD, no internet — next time you're with the young’uns in your life, talk to them about this ... it was a very interesting and amusing discussion around our dinner table recently.
