Volunteers Needed for Carney Stream Cleanup

A local environmental group is looking for help cleaning a tributary of the Gunpowder River that runs through Carney.

Whether you're a concerned citizen, a dedicated environmentalist or a student looking to get some service learning hours, there's an opportunity this weekend to help clean up a stream that runs through the Carney area.

Jennifer Branch is a little-known tributary of the Gunpowder River that runs through Carney on its way to the Chesapeake Bay. The stream has been monitored by the Jennifer Branch Project of the Gunpowder Valley Conservancy for the past two years and the group is looking for your help to make the waterway trash-free.

Volunteers are needed for two locations along the stream watershed—a tributary to Jennifer Branch parallel to Scotts Haven Road and another tributary north of Magledt Road past Hilltop Road.

The stream cleanup begins at 9:30 a.m. Nov. 19, rain or shine—but don't just show up ready to work. Interested volunteers need to contact Jennifer Branch Project manager Peggy Perry (pperry@gunpowderfalls.org, or call 410-668-0118).

Work gloves and trash bags will be provided to volunteers, but you should wear rubber boots and be prepared in case of rain because the cleanup is still going to happen.

There are three other clean-ups in the Carney area as part of the Better Waterways Fall Cleanup and other organizations in the Gunpowder watershed, including Bluewater Baltimore, are participating in the event on Saturday.
