Area Schools Graduate Class of 2013 In Early June

Curious about when Parkville, Overlea and Loch Raven High Schools have their commencements? Check out graduation dates and times on Patch.

Summer officially begins for the high school class of 2013 at the end of this week. By now, caps and gowns have been purchased, nights danced away at prom, and awards given at school. All that remains for 2013-ers is to stroll along the stage at Towson University's Tiger Arena to pick up their diplomas; well, that and to begin the rest of their lives. Know a graduating senior? Show them some love and leave an announcement on Patch congratulating them on their success. Just want to know when each of the local schools is scheduled to see their seniors graduate? Look below. Tuition Increases Coming for CCBC Students

Tuition rates and fees for In-county, out-of-county and out-of-state students will all go up next semester.

Students attending the Community College of Baltimore County will have to dig a little deeper next semester. The college will increase fees across the board by 3 percent. Currently, in-county students pay $106 per credit. Out-of-county and out-of-state students pay $202 and $303 respectively. Under the new tuition rates, those costs will increase to $109, $208 and $312 respectively. General services fees will also increase across the board. Currently, in-county students pay $9 per credit. Out-of-county and out-of-state students pay $18 and $27 respectively. The new increases will bring those fees to $10.50, $20.50 and $30.50 respectively. Registration fees will increase from $40 to $50. Graduation fees will increase from $50 to $75. …

Loch Raven's Girls Lacrosse Advances to State Semifinals

The state semifinal games will be played this weekend at Bel Air High School.

After four rounds of play, one local girls lacrosse team has been crowned a regional champion and advances to the state semifinals. The Class 1A/2A North region champion Loch Raven Raiders will travel to Bel Air High School at 8 p.m. Friday to take on West region champs Winters Mill. To earn the spot in the state semis, the girls crushed Pikesville, 20-7, earlier this week, according to the Maryland Public Secondary Schools Athletic Association website.  While Winters Mill has had to play a total of four games during the playoffs to earn the right to play Loch Raven, the Raiders should be fresh having earned a first-round bye and a second-round forfeit victory against Overlea. Pine Grove Middle School Teachers Honored By Chamber

Mike Maiste and Mary Ellen Pluember were recently recognized by the Baltimore County Chamber of Commerce for Excellence in teaching.

Two area educators were recently honored for excellence in the classroom by the Baltimore County Chamber of Commerce. Mary Ellen Pluemer and Mike Maiste, who both teach at Pine Grove Middle School, were among 11 educators recognized at the economic group's Awards for Excellence in Education dinner Monday night at Martin's West, according to a news release from Baltimore County Public Schools. The two were selected from among a group of nominees representing 37 Baltimore County Schools as suggested by principals, community members, and students, the release states. Pluemer was selected as the geographical winner for the Northeast region while Maiste was selected as the grade level winner for Middle Schools, the release states. Editor's Note…

Carney Elementary Principal On Medical Leave, Won't Return

Dr. Stacey Durkovic is out on medical leave for the remainder of the school year and will not return in September; in the meantime assistant principal Barbie Roemer will lead the school.

UPDATED (9:24 a.m.) The principal of a local elementary school has is on medical leave for the remainder of the school year and won't return in September. A letter sent to parents of Carney Elementary School students by assistant Baltimore County Schools superintendent Karen Blannard on May 10 announced that principal Dr. Stacey L. Durkovic was leave and would not return for the 2013-2014 school year. The change in school leadership was made effective May 6, according to the letter. For the remainder of the year assistant principal Barbie Roemer will fill Durkovic's shoes and a search is underway for a new principal. Sports: Playoff Action Continues, Overlea Wins Big In Track

Overlea High School made moves at the Baltimore County Track and Field Championships over the weekend and one local team has made it to their regional championship.

Playoff action continues for one area school while another made a big showing at the Baltimore County Track and Field Championship over the weekend. Lacrosse Loch Raven High School's girls (No. 4) defeated Sparrows Point (No. 1) 13-7 when they traveled to the east side school Monday afternoon. The victory has earned the Raiders the right to compete for the regional championship in Class 2A North. The girls will host Pikesville (No. 7) for a game later this week, which currently has not been scheduled according to the MPSSAA website. Other regional championship games in Class 2A around the state are set for Wednesday afternoon. If the Raiders are able to get past Pikesville they'll be headed to the State semifinal game against either …

Overlea Baseball Advances, Loch Raven Lacrosse Wins

Loch Raven High School also has baseball and softball teams in competition in the Maryland Public Secondary Schools Athletic Association postseason.

Things are heating up as local high school teams vie for Maryland Public Secondary Schools Athletic Association state championships baseball, lacrosse and softball. Baseball Both Overlea High and Loch Raven have teams competing for the state championship, albeit in different classes. In Class 1A ball, Overlea (No. 5) beat Bluford Drew Jemison-Civitas (No. 12) in a 13-3 rout Friday. The Falcons move on to play at Pikesville (No. 4) this afternoon. A victory would see them play the winner of a Bohemia Manor/Western match-up later this week. Over in Class 2A, Loch Raven (No. 1) takes on Carver (No. 8) Monday afternoon at home following a first-round bye. MPSSAA Softball: Parkville Falls to Towson, Overlea Defeated

The first round of the state championship softball tournament was played Thursday afternoon.

Round one of the Maryland Public Secondary Schools Athletic Association softball tournament is behind us and only one team remains standing. The Loch Raven Raiders (No. 6) travel to Lake Clifton (No. 3) this weekend after a first-round bye. Parkville (No. 5) lost a in a 14-5 upset to Towson (No. 12) Thursday afternoon while Overlea (No. 10) fell to Pikesville (No. 7) 12-2, according to brackets posted on the MPSSAA website. Play begins in the state baseball tournament this afternoon and continues in the boys and girls lacrosse tournaments where, just as in softball, only Loch Raven remains in competition.

MPSSAA Lacrosse: Loch Raven Advances, Parkville, Overlea Fall

Play also begins in the state athletics association baseball tournament Friday.

Despite a rainy Wednesday afternoon, lacrosse games affecting Parkville, Overlea and Loch Raven high schools went on and only one school advanced in the tournament. Loch Raven's boys and girls lacrosse teams both move on to compete in their respective Class 2A/1A tournaments following victories over the Overlea Falcons Wednesday afternoon. The Raiders guys (No. 9) defeated Overlea (No. 8) in a 17-0 rout and move on to play New Town (No. 1) at 4:30 p.m. Friday at Northwest Regional Park. Meanwhile, the Raiders girls (No. 4) beat Overlea (No. 5) by forfeit and move deep into the tournament following a first round bye. Boys, Girls State Lacrosse Tournaments Begin Wednesday

Competition begins in the MPSSAA lacrosse tournaments Wednesday; Loch Raven and Overlea High schools are first round opponents in the boys' tourney.

Play begins in the MPSSAA state tournaments in boys' and girls' lacrosse and softball on Wednesday and two local schools are set to take each other on in the first round. In Boys Class 2A/1A lacrosse the Overlea Falcons (No. 8) take on the Loch Raven Raiders (No. 9) at 4 p.m. Wednesday in Overlea. The winner of the matchup will take on first-seed New Town on Friday. The Girls Class 2A/1A matchup is much the same, but because there are less teams in the tournament both Overlea (No. 5) and Loch Raven (No. 4) earned first-round byes.
