BGE Warns Additional Outages Expected

As of 2 p.m., officials from the utilities company report that power has been restored to more than 133,000 customers.

Although the brunt of superstorm Sandy has passed, Baltimore Gas & Electric officials caution that additional outages are expected. New outages may occur over the next few days as tree and tree limbs weakened by the storm continue falling, according to a news release. As of 2:36 p.m., electric service was restored to more than 166,274 customers.  The BGE current outages map shows that 150,705 customers are still without.  More than 4,500 workers are assisting in ongoing restoration efforts, the release states. BGE To Conduct Vegetation Management On Cromwell Bridge Road

The work will start in late October.

Baltimore Gas and Electric Company plans to start routine tree and vegetation management on Cromwell Bridge Road in late October. In a news release, the utilities company said the work, which will be done along a 115,000 volt transmission line on the road, is mandated every 5 years by the Maryland Public Service Commission to reduce disruptions to electric service. The line serves about 50,000 customers in Towson, Parkville and Timonium. The company first completed this vegetation management effort in 2007; and faced much criticism from area residents who were concerned about the environmental impact and limited public notice, according to The Baltimore Sun. BGE representatives said customers were notified about the project through letters…

BGE Seeks Rate Hike

The utilities company cited a need to make essential upgrades to its gas and electric services.

Following the recent severe "derecho" that left many Baltimore County residents without power for days, Baltimore Gas and Electric is looking to raise its rates. In a Friday statement, the utilities company announced that it filed with the Maryland Public Service Commission to increase its rates for gas and electric services for both residential and commercial customers. According to BGE, the typical residential gas bill would increase by $4.62 a month and the typical electric bill would increase by $7.22. The company said this would amount to a 4.4 percent increase in total electric bills and 6.6 percent in total electric bills across all customer classes. "We realize that any increase in our electricity and gas distribution rates can be …

Restoring Power to Take Days

More than 400,000 without power in Central Maryland; 400 linemen arriving from FL and MS in 2-3 days, BGE officials say.

More than 400,000 Baltimore Gas and Electric customers in Central Maryland remain without electricity in the wake of a powerful and swiftly moving storm that passed through the area Friday night. BGE spokesperson Rob Gould said that it will likely be several days before power is restored to all customers. "We know this is going to be a multi-day response," Gould said at BGE's storm operations command center in northwest Baltimore County. "This is not something where we'll be able to restore power in a couple of days." According to BGE's storm center page, more than 418,000 customers--or about a third of the 1.2 million customers the utility company serves in Central Maryland--were without electricity by mid-day Saturday. Power outages were…

Warning about eating food that needs refrigeration: I did not think about this when I ordered take-out from a little Chinese kitchen on Sunday. Now I wish I did. They were closed all day Saturday, and did not even have a single ice cube to spare for my 'cold' drink. I ate chicken that had been unrefrigerated for more than 24 hours and really felt bad afterwards! Note to future self: DON'T do that!   more ›
