CCBC Essex Marks Opening of New Building

A $16.2 million renovation will serve math and science students.

County and state officials joined the Community College of Baltimore County-Essex in cutting the ribbon on the college's renovated math and science building on Wednesday. Construction began on the $16.2 million project in May of 2010 and finished this past August. The project, funded with state, county and CCBC capital funds, will serve more than 8,000 math and science students next semester. Thirteen science labs were renovated and the exterior facade and windows ere replaced on the 59,630-square-foot building. The math and science building first opened in 1976. "It's not too bad an age for a person, but it's a terrible age for a building," said CCBC President Sandra Kurtinitis, who remarked that it's her fifth major ribbon-cutting at …

CCBC Essex Graduate Thankful for 'New Beginning'

Jillian Goles, 20, of Rosedale, will be this year's commencement speaker and the 2012 President’s Distinguished Graduate Award recipient.

Jillian Goles admits she was more concerned in high school about sports and being popular rather than concentrating on her academics. Goles said by the time she got her academic act together at Eastern Technical High School, it was too late for her to go to any of the colleges of her choosing. Left with few post-high school options, Goles decided to go to CCBC Essex. Two years later, Goles said that decision was the best one she has made in her life. Goles will graduate Sunday with 900 other CCBC students and will be this year's commencement speaker and the 2012 President’s Distinguished Graduate Award recipient. "I was heart-broken when I didn't get into the colleges I applied to," said Goles, 20, of Rosedale. "But it was the wake-up …

Baltimore County Police Arrest Peeping Tom

Zachary Campbell, 20, of Baltimore is alleged to have looked in at females as they used the restroom at several local colleges, including CCBC Essex.

Baltimore County police arrested a 20-year-old man who is suspected of spying on females as they used the restroom at several local colleges. Zachary Campbell, of the 1600 block of Northbourne Road in Baltimore, is alleged by police to be the serial peeping tom described by students who reported similar incidents over the last few months at CCBC Essex, Towson University, Loyola University and Morgan State, county police spokeswoman Detective Cathy Batton said. According to court records, Campbell has been charged with three counts of peeping tom among other related charges. CCBC spokesperson Hope Davis said in each of the two cases reported on her campus, female students reported that a man looked under their stall as they used the …

CCBC Essex Baseball Continues Streaky Season

The Knights have lost four of five following their recent six-game winning streak.

Streaky might be the best way to describe CCBC Essex’s baseball team's season to date. The Knights are 16-11 overall and 9-6 in MD JUCO play, which is good enough for sixth place in the 15-team league heading into tonight’s 6:30 p.m. game at Harford Community College. CCBC Essex has lost four of its last five games, which includes getting swept in a double-header Saturday at home against Chesapeake College by scores of 14-2 and 14-10, respectively. Prior to their recent struggles, the Knights had won six straight games. That winning streak came after CCBC Essex opened its season 0-4 before winning nine of its next 12 games. Among the Knights’ leaders are sophomore pitcher Nicholas Morton, who entered the weekend 3-1 with a 2.25 ERA with 21…

Soccer: Loch Raven Coach Takes Helm at CCBC Essex

Joe Fiedler takes over for Rich Zinkand, who stepped down in December to take over the boy's soccer program at Calvert Hall.

Joe Fiedler knows what it takes to lead a championship team. Fiedler led the boys soccer team to the 2009 Class 1A state title along with appearances in finals in 2006-2007 and trips to the state semifinals in 2003, 2004 and 2008 while at the helm from 1997-2011. Follow Essex-Middle River Patch on Facebook and Twitter. But, Fiedler said at some point you need to seek out new challenges, which is what he did after being named the new CCBC Essex men’s soccer coach. He takes over for Rich Zinkand, who stepped down in December to take over a similar post at Calvert Hall. "It was a very tough decision to make as the Loch Raven community, from the students to the teachers to the parents have embraced me," Fiedler said. "But this was an …

CCBC Essex Community Garden Continues to Grow

A new greenhouse will soon allow the college to grow organic vegetables and donate the food to the Eastern Resource Family Center all year long.

CCBC Essex student Patrick Megher spent much of his childhood helping his family grow a garden. The 20-year-old Parkville man sees gardening as a form of relaxing and helping him get in touch with the environment. So when Megher heard about a community organic garden on campus, he signed up to volunteer. “We grew our own food for so long,” he said. “Why can’t we do more of that today?” Megher’s opinion is apparently shared by many other students, faculty, staff and even nearby residents of the college. More than 100 volunteers are involved in some way with the community garden, which began a little more than a year ago, thanks to a $6,000 grant from the campus. This grant allowed students, with the help of campus workers, to build a fence…

CCBC Essex Soccer Assistant Coach Having a 'Blast'

Scott Buete, a member of the Baltimore Blast since 2007, joined the Knights staff this season.

Scott Buete was born in Arizona and moved to Bowie with his family when he was about 8 years old. But by then Buete, who attended High Bridge Elementary School, had been playing soccer for about three years. “I played around age 5 in Arizona and then joined a club in Bowie. I also played Bowie Boys and Girls Club basketball and baseball as well,” said Buete, who grew up in Old Bowie. Those early years with soccer helped pave the way for a pro career for Buete, a former star at Bowie High under head coach Rich Kirkland. After graduating from Bowie High in 1999, he played at the University of Maryland from 1999 to 2003 and was an All-American for the Terps. Since college, the White Marsh resident has played pro outdoor soccer for the Chicago…

Freshmen Rule with CCBC Essex Cross Country

Head coach Larry Williams has several new faces, including Loch Raven grad Mary Gauvin and former Kenwood standout Bethany Anderson.

Last year, the CCBC Essex women’s cross country team placed third in the Maryland JUCO Region XX championships, behind the performance of Joanna Barranco (fifth), Erin Williams (11th), Barbara Henschel (13th) and Amanda Foble (15th). Barranco is now an assistant coach with the team this season. Williams is attending Bloomsburg (PA) University. Henschel is attending Towson University.  And Foble, who like the other three got a two-year degree at the school, is working in the area. That left head coach Larry Williams, the father of Erin, with seven freshmen going into a scrimmage with Anne Arundel Community College last week. “That was our dominant team last year,” said coach Williams, who began the program four years ago. "We are a total …

CCBC Essex Men's Soccer Still Undefeated

The Knights improve to 4-0-1 in MD JUCO play following two wins over the weekend.

Sophomore midfielder Adam Randlett (Perry Hall) scored two goals as the CCBC Essex men’s soccer team improved to 4-0-1 in MD JUCO play following Sunday’s 7-1 win against visiting Allegany College of Maryland. This win by the Knights came one day after the team defeated Anne Arundel Community College, 2-0, on Saturday. CCBC Essex next plays at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday when it travels to New Castle, Del., to face Delaware Tech.
