After closing nearly 10 months ago, the popular Carney bar has opened in a new incarnation.
It's true. After being closed for nearly 10 months, the Barn in Carney reopened Wednesday afternoon. Owner Bob Rush II spent months completely gutting the interior and rebuilding from the ground up, and the fruits of his labor have paid off. The renovated restaurant now features 24 beers on draft and a menu focused on local producers. Check out photos of the Barn's upstairs in the gallery attached to this article. Currently, the upstairs at The Barn Taphouse is open for business from 11 a.m.-2 a.m. every day of the week. Rush said that the downstairs crab house is set to reopen in a few weeks, likely toward the end of April or beginning of May. The Barn's new menu offers "pub food with a twist" and is focused on local producers—on it you'…

The Parkville-Carney Business Professional Association will host their annual contest next month, but participants have to register by Dec 1.
The holidays are right around the corner, and so is the beginning of what has quickly become a Parkville tradition. The Parkville Carney Business Professional Association will once again host their holiday window decorating contest for the sixth year, according to an email from the group. If you have a group—Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, school and church groups, rec council programs—that you think might like to participate, now is the time to get in touch with business association president Ed Pinder. In an email, Pinder wrote that both businesses interested in having their windows decorated and groups interested in decorating them should contact him at either 410-262-8954 or by email at pinderlegal@aol.com. "We are challenging the local …

The new Asian grocery store opened in mid-October.
If you're part of the growing group of folks who love to cook, you no longer have to make the long commute out to the Catonsville-Ellicott City area to grab those hard to find Asian ingredients at Lotte Plaza or H-Mart. Pork belly? Check. Baby Chinese broccoli? Check. Black chicken, Chinese okra, tofu? Check, check, check. You can find all of the above at the new A-Mart Asian Grocery store in Satyr Hill Plaza, sandwiched between Goodyear Tires and Satyr Hill Cue Club at 2025 E. Joppa Road. The store, which opened on Oct. 18, offers a wide selection of Chinese, Korean, Japanese and Filipino foods. On Thursdays, they get in shipments of fresh vegetables and on Fridays, you can find fresh seafood. If pre-prepared foods and beverages are more …

Pho Thanh Cong, which offers Vietnamese cuisine, has been open since Oct. 18.
After a morning spent taking photos of flooding near the Gunpowder and Minebank Run, I was pleasantly surprised to find just what I needed in Carney Village Shopping Center: a hot bowl of soup. Not just any soup, though—the savory Vietnamese noodle soup known as pho. A new restaurant, Pho Thanh Cong opened in the shopping center next to Mars grocery store earlier this month. The shop, owned by the Pham family—nine siblings and their various extended family—opened it's doors on Oct. 18. It's name: thanh cong, which means "sucess", is rather apt. As I ate lunch—an order of spring rolls packed with noodles, lettuce, shrimp and pork with peanut sauce and a bowl of pho with beef, sprouts and herbs—I was able to catch up with Carney couple Kirk …

The mainstay bar near the intersection of Harford and Joppa Roads closed its doors back in July.
Whether you were a regular at The Barn or just stopped by once in a while, one thing is for sure: you wouldn't recognize the inside today. Gone are tables, chairs, and even the bar itself. Ceilings have been stripped away and floors are being redone, but never fear—current owners Bob and Bobby Rush, a father-son team, will keep the name of the bar they called a "landmark" intact when they reopen. Bob Rush, who has, along with partner Vernon Boozer, owned the building occupied by The Barn since 1979, said that renovations to the building are major and that a reopening is a "few months" away. "We're going to take our time and make sure everything gets done right," he said. When the bar and restaurant reopens, the focus will be on "bar food …

An area woman was one of ten people nationwide to win a sweepstakes at the pharmacy/convenience store.
How many times have you signed up for a contest, and forgotten about it? That's pretty much was Carney resident Jo Ann Carolan did. But in a twist, she also won. Carolan was one of ten people across the U.S. to win 1,000,000 customer rewards points from Walgreens. The prize totals about $1,000 in cash, according to a Walgreens spokeswoman. Claiming her prize on Thursday afternoon at the store at 9616 Harford Road, Carolan said it was hard to believe that she'd won. "I got an email saying I was a winner, and I just couldn't believe it," Carolan said. "I read it three or four times, I thought 'I wonder if this is a scam or if it's real' I've never won anything before." The giveaway was part of a promotion for a new customer loyalty program …

Founded by a Parkville native, Bikram Yoga Mid Atlantic held a grand opening last weekend.
Opening her own yoga studio was a dream come true for native Parkvillian Debbie Vojik. A student of Bikram yoga for 13 years and a teacher for the past 6, Vojik recently opened Bikram Yoga Midatlantic in Harford Road Plaza on Aug. 27. "I really thought that this community needed it," Vojik said."So far people who have come in have been really, really happy—they're glad not to have to drive all the way around the beltway anymore." Vojik, a nurse by trade who previously taught yoga at Bikram Yoga Hampden and Bikram Yoga Baltimore, teaches about half of the 20 classes at her new studio. Bikram is a form of yoga practiced in a hot room—the room at Bikram Mid Atlantic is kept at 105 degrees. "It's 26 postures or 'asanas' and two breathing …
