Archdiocese, Institutions Fight Back on Birth Control Rule

Many area schools and a hospital would be affected by the new rule.

The Archdiocese of Baltimore is gearing up for a fight against new federal rules requiring them to cover contraceptives for many church-affiliated employees. In a letter to congregants released Tuesday, Cardinal-designate Edwin O'Brien said the archdiocese "cannot—and will not—comply with this unjust law." "And as a result, unless the rule is overturned, we Catholics ... must be prepared either to violate our consciences, or to drop health coverage for our employees (and suffer the penalties for doing so)," O'Brien wrote. Catholic Leaders Blast New Contraception Rules

The Obama administration is requiring religious employers to provide health care plans that cover access to contraception.

Catholic leaders in Maryland blasted the Obama administration for implementing a new rule requiring religious employers to offer health plans that cover contraceptives without co-pays or deductibles. The Department of Health and Human Services stated that the new rule "ensures that women with health insurance coverage will have access to the full range" of all "FDA-approved forms of contraception." Nonprofit and religious employers have until Aug. 1, 2013 to comply with the new law. In Parkville, Father Steve Hook of St. Ursula's Parish told Patch that he disagrees strongly with the law but doesn't think it will affect his parish — but that locally, it will have an effect on Catholic institutions that serve non-Catholics like St. Joesph's …

My church doesn't do that any more they teach absistinace. We should all teach the youth to pray to God. Pray the rosary which our Mother Mary gave us to use against sin. The USA Catholic Bishops conference made rules that the Vatcian approved of to stop obscenicty and I know of a priest who did sexual abuse are now in jail.   more ›
