The proposal, spurred by the Chrissy Polis assault, will look similar to a bill passed by the Howard County Council in December.
Councilman Tom Quirk said Monday he will introduce a gender identity anti-discrimination bill in the Baltimore County Council later this month. The bill will be similar to a law passed last month by the Howard County Council, Quirk said. Proponents of the law say it was spurred by a highly- publicized attack on Chrissy Polis, a transgendered Rosedale woman, last year. Quirk, a freshman Democrat from Catonsville, said the primary aim of the bill is to protect transgendered workers from discrimination and firing because of their sexual identity. "It's my strong belief that the only thing that should matter is someone's qualifications for a job," Quirk said. The bill will also contain language dealing with the use of public accommodations, …

Caroline Temmermand worked hard to realize her true identity. Now she's working hard to help others stamp out discrimination against transgender individuals.
This story is one in a continuing series on the changing American dream. Sitting on a picnic table, amidst the fresh, bright greenery of one of Arlington’s public parks, Caroline Temmermand, division chief of Arlington County Parks and Natural Resources, shared her life story. Perpetually smiling, she spoke with the kind warmth and confidence that comes from complete certainty. She was stylishly dressed and rarely broke eye contact or seemed to question herself in any way. She seemed a woman prepared to take on the world. Forty-three years ago, Temmermand was a long way from the senior executive and community leader she is today. Her name was Stephen Temmermand. She was a scared 13-year-old boy sent to see a psychologist because of …

It also led to rallies in support of Polis and a call for tougher anti-discrimination laws. Polis hopes her life can return to normal now that the older of the two attackers, Teonna Brown, 19, pleaded guilty Thursday in Baltimore County Circuit Court in Towson to one count of first-degree assault and one count of committing a hate crime. According to the …
