Chief: Gene Kirchner Was Searching for Man Trapped in Fire

The volunteer firefighter who was was critically injured during the April 24 fire in Reisterstown died Thursday at Maryland Shock Trauma. His funeral is set for Sunday.

It was a horrific fire April 24 that the Reisterstown Volunteer Fire Company was called to control. Volunteer firefighter Gene Kirchner, 25, and several others were searching the home at 19 Hanover Rd., trying to find a resident because "very, very agitated residents were screaming that someone was trapped," Baltimore County Fire Chief John Hohman said during a press conference Thursday afternoon. "Gene and others, they attempted to rescue the individual," Hohman said, calling the fire "horrific." Kirchner, a nine-year veteran of the company, died on Thursday at Maryland Shock Trauma after spending eight days in critical condition. UPDATE: Reisterstown Firefighter Gene Kirchner Dies in Hospital

The 25-year-old is the second fatality from a house fire April 24 at 19 Hanover Road in Reisterstown.

UPDATE (2:30 p.m.)--Volunteer Firefighter Gene Kirchner died Thursday afternoon at Maryland Shock Trauma, according to the Baltimore County Fire Department. The member of the Reisterstown Volunteer Fire company was critically injured April 24 while doing a search during a house fire at 19 Hanover Rd in Reisterstown. "It is with deep sorrow and regret that the Reisterstown Volunteer Fire Company announces the line of duty passing of Firefighter Gene Kirchner," according to a statement from the fire company. "Gene succumbed to his injures after an 8-day fight." Gene was a 9-year member of the fire company, and was a junior firefighter for 2 years, it states. Firefighters Injured in Fullerton Blaze

Two firefighters suffered non-life threatening burns at fire on Jenelles Way.

Two firefighters suffered minor, non-life threatening burns while battling a blaze on the 7700 block of Jenelles Way in Fullerton Saturday morning, a Baltimore County Fire Department spokesman said. Fire Director Glenn Blackwell said fire crews responded at 10:05 a.m. to 7704 Jenelles Way. Firefighters reported fire in the basement and that all of those living in the home were out of the residence, Blackwell added. The fire was placed under control in 20 minutes and the injured firefighters were both transported to Bayview Burn Center for treatment, Blackwell said. No civilians were injured in the fire.
